This May long weekend is looking gorgeous! Finally! Can I hear an AMEN? Here are a few things to do with the fam from fresh fruit and seedlings to a spin on the ferris wheel at the PNE, its lining up to be a glorious few days.
Kitsilano (Sundays) and Trout Lake (Saturdays) Farmers Markets are up and running for the summer now. This means farm fresh fruit, veg and baked goods. And now many of the markets have craft beer, local fish and hormone-free meats. And for the kiddies, there’s typically live music (and cookies) and the odd balloon twister or two! Have a green thumb? This will be the spot for seedlings.
It’s time to snarf hot dogs, cotton candy and mini donuts and then ride the Hellevator! Okay maybe not. Playland is now open weekends with three new (and gentler) family rides. Spin your way through a magical land on Bug Whirled, a new coaster ride or peddle your way to the clouds flapping your wings on The Flutterbye, then take the plunge on the mechanical Dizzy Drop.
Take the plunge
It’s meant to be sunny and hot by Monday and a few of the city’s outdoor pools open this weekend. So suit up and take the littles to one of Vancouver’s spectacular outdoor pools. If all goes well, you may even need sunscreen.

Take a day trip to Bowen Island
Bowen Island is only a 20-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay and full of natural and artisanal delights. There are lovely hikes (try Killarney Lake for lilypads, towering firs and rock skipping). Plus there are charming shops, restaurants, cafes, and several beaches with jaw-dropping views. Time your return to the mainland for sunset.
