2024 Festival Details

The festival occurs May 27 – June 2 in person on Granville Island. You can expect world-class theatre, music, dance, circus, puppetry and storytelling performers who come from all over the world to entertain Vancouver children and families. 

Yassama and the Beaded Calabash

Grounded in the rich tapestry of African oral tradition, Yassama and the Beaded Calabash narrates the tale of a young girl. Assisted by the ancient Baobab tree, she becomes the savior of her village during a drought, imparting a profound lesson on the significance of revering and cherishing Mother Earth.

Tree – a show for babies and toddlers

May 28-June 2
Ages: 0-2 years

Experience the magical world of Tree in this gentle and intimate show for the youngest of audiences. Tree is a rare opportunity for your baby to experience live theatre created just for them! 

Settle into mama bird’s cozy nest while she warms her luminous clutch of eggs. Plants, insects, and animals visit, accompanied by soothing melodies and rhythmic music. As evening falls, you’ll rest under the rising moon, stars, and the shimmering Milky Way, gathering strength to spread your wings like a fledgling bird of light.

The Papa Penguin Play

Meet Peaches and Izzy, the beloved penguin pair who light up the Zoo with their daily performances! These two male penguins have stolen the spotlight as the Zoo’s star attraction. Their harmonious life takes an unexpected turn when other penguin couples start hatching eggs and raising chicks. Inspired by their desire to start a family, Peaches and Izzy embark on a heartwarming journey with the help of the Zoo Keeper. Join them as they celebrate their penguin chick’s first birthday in a truly unforgettable way. “The Papa Penguin Play” is a musical that celebrates the diversity of family and the performer within us all.

Written by Dave Deveau and co-commissioned and co-produced by Carousel Theatre for Young People and the Vancouver International Children’s Festival in association with Zee Zee Theatre.
