50 Essential Portrait Photographers: Barbara Casey of Bellies and Babies by Barbara

Barbara Casey is a Lower Mainland based wedding, family and portrait photographer. Working closely with her clients she likes to discover their personalities and style and use her photography skills to bring out the best in everyone she works with.

Why did you get into photography?

I received a post grad in design from the UK and then followed that with a formal training in Commercial Photography after moving to Canada in 1993. While photographing food, products and rock n roll stars, I received numerous requests from friends to photograph weddings and decided to form “I Do!” Wedding Photography in 2002.

Tell us a bit about your company.

After a successful couple of years, “Bellies and Babies by Barbara” was created in 2004 after so many past clients returned with requests for me to photograph their new and growing families. I work closely with my clients always listening to their requests, using my skills  to create memories that they will treasure forever. Whether we are working on location, at their home or my home studio, the sessions are always fun and my clients are always thrilled by the results. With so much experience in photography there are many things I can offer to my clients,  whether they are looking for a studio session with props or a fun outdoor session at the park I can accomodate them. I also like to keep my photo sessions affordable as I am sure professional photography is luxury for many families with all the costs that go along with a new baby.

How would you characterize your style of photography?

When I created Bellies and Babies I wanted to offer a service that was unique and available to everyone. I like to describe it as  as “Fun, Fresh and Affordable”. Simply put it’s photography that captures a particular moment in a child or expectant mom’s life.

Who are your clients?

I have so many repeat clients it’s wonderful! Receiving an email or phone call from someone who’s photos I did last year is always a huge compliment for me. And those clients pass my name on to their friends and family so my client base is continually expanding. I even have one family that lives in New Zealand and comes back to Vancouver every summer to visit family….they have booked a session with me every year since 2005!

What should your mom clients expect when working with you?

As well as being extremely creative I am also wonderfully patient, sessions with a baby or toddler just can’t be rushed. Flexibilty is also key….I have had clients phone me in a panic on the day of a shoot because their little one has come down with a fever or has managed to bump their head, soI am always more than happy to reschedule so we can get the best possible pictures!

Anything else to add?

I love working with people and I love the fact that the images I am creating today, whether weddings, bellies or babies are going to be looked at in years to come and passed down to family members is a true honour.

  • I highly recommend Judy of Judith Laurel photography (www.judithlaurelphotography.ca). She is located in Ocean Park highly enough. My family has done several sessions with her including maternity, newborn, toddler and family. She has captured the essence of my family members. I can not believe that she was able to get so many fantastic photos of my two year old (both during our most recent session and when he was 18 months). My son barely seems to stop moving yet Judy manages to get countless amazing photos.

Her photographs are magical and the experience is a pleasure each time. She is patient, fun, creative, and professional. Check out her website. You will not be disappointed.
