Self Care for Moms: What to do with a spare hour, day or weekend

“You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.”

Doesn’t it feel like all you’re doing these days is pouring from your cup? It’s the never-ending cycle of making school lunches, picking up at after-school care, driving to after school activities, helping with homework, over and over and over. It’s time to put on the brakes, stop the Groundhog Day repetition and make some time for you. It’s important to recharge because you can’t take care of others unless you take care of yourself first. Remember: you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Whether you have an hour, a day or maybe even a weekend, here are a few ways to fill up Mama’s cup:

An hour: Go for a workout

The Practice Studio

Nothing will energize you more than moving your body and the Practice Studio in downtown Vancouver offers a huge variety of classes to help you do just that. Daily classes include Bells & Bikes (using kettle bells and air bikes), Elevate (a full cardio mini trampoline workout), Float & Sting (incorporating heavy bags, air bikes and boxing techniques) and Release (a mat class with foam rolling and stretching). Their goal is to help you be the best you; body and mind. You create it and they’ll use their tools to support you.

The Arts Club Theatre Company puts on amazing shows all year long. Right now (until October 7th) you can catch The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the 2015 Tony Award Winner for Best Play, at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage. The play allows us to peek inside the mind of 15 year old Christopher Boone. He is incredibly talented at math, but never ventures beyond his street and distrusts strangers. When his neighbour’s dog is killed, Christopher challenges his own barriers to uncover the truth about the dog, his family and himself.

If you have the luxury of an entire solo weekend, head up to the Okanagan. The Oliver Osoyoos Winery Association has an expansive list on their website of all the wineries the area has to offer. And many of them, like Silver Sage and Nk’Mip Cellars, offer guest houses and other accommodations right at the vineyards. Can’t beat that commute! There are always tastings and tours available at the wineries, but if you’re looking for an extra special getaway, check out the Winter in Wine Country Festival at the end of November. Enjoy special winery tours, the Be Merry event celebrating dry rosé and seasonal favourites and the Festival of Trees.
