50 Essential Portrait Photographers: Rebecca Sehn

At the tender age of 26, photographer Rebecca Sehn is one of the freshest talents in the Vancouver photography scene. She has been quickly attracting attention with her contemporary children’s portraiture as well as her wedding work.
Why did you get into photography?
I always knew that I would be happiest either doing something artistic or working with kids. It wasn’t until four years ago that I backpacked across Europe with my first dslr, fell in love with photography and discovered a way I could do both! When I returned home from that trip I began taking pictures of everything and everyone I could, and two years later I launched my business. Six months ago I took the plunge and quit my day job, and now here I am – making a living doing something I love!
Tell us a bit about your company.
I began photographing weddings a little less than two years ago – and absolutely loved it. Soon after, I discovered the challenge of children’s portraiture, and now I would say my work is split pretty evenly between the two. Starting my own business has been an exciting challenge, and I wouldn’t change any of it. I love that what I do always changes from day to day: I never have to worry about getting bored!
How would you characterize your style of photography?
My images are contemporary, clean, and often candid. (Alliteration was not my goal there, I promise!) I love to know that I captured my client’s personality in a session, and so try to not create overly posed shots. My goal is that the simplicity of my images will make them timeless – something that could hang on a wall for a lifetime.
Who are your clients?
My clients are young engaged couples and young families. They are energetic, love to play, love to laugh, are very easygoing and have a great sense of style. Family is #1 to them. (My clients are awesome.)
What should your mom clients expect when working with you?
Mom clients should expect to laugh a lot and play a lot! They should know that I am extremely patient and easy going, and that I like to discuss location and wardrobe a lot beforehand to ensure we end up with the best result possible. They should also expect to love their photos to bits.
Anything else to add?
I absolutely love what I do, and can’t wait to find out what the future has in store for me and my work.
