{Giveaway} Back to School tips for a healthy smile & a chance to win a Herschel backpack + goodies

When summer hits, so do sweet kid faves like slushies, ice cream cones, popsicles, and bubble teas, none of which are easy on the teeth. With a new school year coming up, it’s time to book the kids a dentist appointment so they can hit the books with a healthy grin.

4 Back to School tips to keep everybody smiling

1. Book a visit to the dentist

Ensure a healthy start to the school year by booking the kids in for a dentist appointment so they can go back to class with a smile.

Remember to visit the dentist every 6 months so your child’s dentist can take care of their teeth and gums, diagnose and treat or prevent dental problems before they get bigger.

2. Develop a healthy brushing routine

To maintain good oral health, you need to brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day. This goes for children and parents too.

In the morning rush children may want to skip brushing and go straight to school. That’s a no no. Make brushing every morning for two minutes a routine from young age, so it’s an unbreakable habit.

Try to make it not feel like a chore. Let them choose the colour of their toothbrushes, make a song for brushing time, get creative!

3. Keep teeth clean and eat healthy at school

Encourage your children to rinse their mouths with water after each meal to help remove some of the food particles that contribute to plaque.

Also encourage healthy eating. Tooth-friendly snacks include fruit, string cheese, vegetables, unsweetened applesauce and nuts. Avoid sticky foods, such as candy, fruit roll ups, and granola bars. These foods stick to teeth surfaces and cause decay.

And remember, drink lots of water!

4. Buy the essentials

Buy a toothpaste your child likes. You can even buy child-friendly floss that tastes great, too! The more kid-friendly your dental supplies, the more your child will love keeping up with their oral hygiene routine.

Make sure your child’s toothbrush is in good shape. If it has been more than three months since you bought your child a new toothbrush, it’s time to replace it.

Before your child goes back to school, PDG Dental recommends getting kids a custom-made mouthguard, especially for children who participate in sports on a weekly basis. Mouthguards have been proven to mitigate some of the damage of a concussion. Buying a custom-made mouthguard from your dentist for your child is a great way to help them stay safe while they have fun playing sports.
