In Search of Sweet Dreams with a Bed Bolster

The peace that comes when the bedtime routine is over is one of my favourite times of day. While I love reading stories and lulling my little guy to sleep it often comes with challenges. One challenge I haven’t thought about until recently was the bedrail we installed on our son’s toddler size bed a number of months ago. It has proven to be quite the pain in the armpit. I recently tried a new bed bolster, in hopes of better results.

Let me back up first and explain the armpit pain, though. Our son’s mattress sits on wooden slats. When we installed the bedrail, which slips under the mattress, the brackets of the bedrail constantly fell between the slats. To compensate we put the lid of a storage container under the mattress to support the bedrail, but it still slips when my sons decides to climb on it. Not very safe. Then there is the fact that the bedrail is so tall that I can’t see my son’s face easily when I’m sitting on the floor so I have to lean sideways over it, effectively cutting off the circulation to my hand as the bedrail jams up into my delicate underarm bits.

Trying out a Bed Bolster

Until I was asked to review a product from The Shrunks, an inflatable bed bolster used for travel, I had no idea that I was suffering needlessly. Mom brain is a funny thing.

But I digress. Once the bed bolster came in the mail I gathered my son and partner together so we could see how it works. I explained that we would test the product at bedtime and if we liked it we could use it for travel purposes.

It was a cinch to inflate with the included hand pump, and it slipped easily under the bottom sheet of my son’s toddler-sized bed. The length of the bolster matched the length of the mattress perfectly and I can see that it would work for any bed that was bigger.

Not Just for Travel

Although it is really meant for travel, it was clear from the minute my son tested out the bed bolster that it would become a permanent fixture on his bed. He was able to get in and out of his bed easily, but I could see it would keep him safely in his bed at night.

The Shrunks bed bolster has made bedtime more relaxing in our house. Our little guy loves to rest his head on it while we read stories to him and mom gets to keep the feeling in her hands, which is a win for everybody.
