Baby Love: Green Bean Baby

Green Bean Baby is a Vancouver-based company that offers a complete line of incredibly soft baby clothing, accessories, bedding and bath towels. The designs are sewn in BC from 100% certified organically-grown cotton to address growing concerns about human health, the environment, and safe working conditions in the textile industry. Green Bean Baby designs and detailing are simple, sweet and gender-neutral–the perfect eco-friendly gift for the little bean in your life. Lynn Stapleford is the owner and sat down to answer some of our questions for us.

What were you doing before you opened your business?

I was actually working as an analytical chemist at a biotech company. I did an about-face starting Green Bean Baby.

What inspired you to launch your business?

Having my first daughter started a new page in my life. I was looking for a career change that included using more of my creative side and needed something that would allow me to be closer to my daughter. I don’t have formal design training, however, I learned sewing and other needle crafts from my mom and grandmother from a very early age. I became interested in organic cotton after doing some research on raising baby in a green and safe environment. There is a huge amount of chemicals involved in the growing and manufacturing of conventional cotton so I knew I needed to use only organic cotton. Green Bean Baby was born from the idea of combining my passion for sewing, babies and environmental issues.

Who are your products for?

New moms and dads and their family and friends buy Green Bean Baby designs. Our end customers are looking for organic clothing and love the fact they are locally-made, gender-neutral and adorable! Green Bean Baby is mainly a wholesale business that works with independent children’s stores and eco-stores. We also have an online store.

Green Bean Baby is a mission-based company that incorporates environmentally and socially-responsible values into its daily business practices. All our products are made from certified organic cotton. We try to get the fabric from as close to home as possible to reduce our carbon footprint. We work hard to use recycled, reused or compostable packaging and marketing materials. All of our products are sewn right here in BC.
