50 Essential Portrait Photographers: Carmen vanDyck of Carmen vanDyck Photography

A few weeks ago, Vancouver Mom kicked off its 50 Essential Vancouver Portrait Photographers series. We’re on the look-out for photographers who demonstrate a high calibre of talent, as well as cover family, maternity, baby or kids – like our newest addition Carmen vanDyck of Carmen vanDyck Photography.

Why did you get into photography?

I have always had a love for photography and a love for children. And I have always loved taking pictures of people. Once I had my first son, those passions were reborn. As I took photos of my son, friends started asking me to take photos of their children, and it grew into a business from there.

Tell us a bit about your company.

My company is me. :o) It has been something that I have grown on my own. From something I did here and there on the side, to what it is now, an almost full time job. I photograph baby bellies, births, newborns, babies, children and families.

How would you characterize your style of photography?

I firmly believe that every photographer has their own style. Sure, some have similarities, but everyone has their own unique flair. Which is why I believe it is all the more important to look around, and find the photographer whose photos you just love. I have a hard time characterizing my style. I think my style is relaxed, intimate, fresh and colorful all at once. It’s my goal to not capture just the people, but the connections, the relationships. I am a natural light, on location photographer.

Who are your clients?

My clients are mostly young families: pregnant women, newborn babies, children and their families in the lower mainland, and especially the valley.

What should your mom clients expect when working with you?

My clients should expect a fairly relaxed atmosphere when working with me. We meet at the client’s home or a location of their choosing, and just spend some time together. I would rather capture people as they are, so I like to follow their lead.  I would rather see clients play and interact with each other than sit and pose for the camera. I usually spend about two hours with my clients so we have time to get nice and comfortable with each other and with the camera. :o)

  • I have had two sessions with Carmen. One maternity and one newborn/ family. For each session Carmen was amazing- both making myself (feeling huge, unattractive and pregnant) and my partner feel at ease. The results were amazingly, beautiful.

Then for our newborn session, I felt quite overwhelmed as a new mom with a crying baby. Carmen was calming and able to make me feel relaxed and comfortable and calm my son… getting some stunning pictures of both him and our new family.

I would recommend Carmen to ANYONE that wants beautiful pictures and memories.

  • you are such a talented lady, I wish you weren’t booked up because I’ll have my triplets soon and I would love to capture the specialness of that blessing! God continue to bless your business Carmen!
