50 Essential Portrait Photographers: Tracey Heppner of Tracey L Heppner Photography

Today, I’d like you to meet Tracey Heppner of Tracey L Heppner Photography. Tracey’s varied career has taken her all over the world – from being a midwife and doula in the Philippines to shooting weddings in the prairies.

Why did you get into photography?

I have been around pictures since I was a teenager – looking at them, wondering about them, developing them.  I think its the way I have always viewed the world – still images.  So when I started taking them, something in me came alive.  I became a documenter of life. It’s true. Anyone who knows me, knows that I have always had my camera with me – whether it’s in a birthing clinic in the Philippines, a wedding on a hot prairie afternoon or in a mountain field in the middle of northern Italy. I photograph life as it happens.  And being able to do that for other people is so amazing.

Tell us a bit about your company.

My company began in 2003 after my second child was born. We lived in rural Saskatchewan and really… there’s not much to do in a little city! I told Lover (aka my husband Jonathan) that I wanted to start my own photography business cuz a “day job” doing the same old same old, was not my cup of tea. He has supported me ever since and has been my biggest fan. I shoot primarily weddings and portraits.  It has taken me all over western Canada and parts of Europe and Asia. I am thankful so often how blessed I am with my job.

How would you characterize your style of photography?

I would have to say my style is fun, personal, intimate, candid… capturing real moments. I love photographing people in places they are most comfortable. For some its in their home, for others it’s in a park or ocean, and for others its and alley in the urban city. My goal is to make my photographs “feel”. I love emotion in photographs. It’s all part of the “telling their story”: the older couple cuddling; or the young couple and their new love so passionate and romantic; or the new baby and the life in their eyes; or the bride filled with anticipation and excitement just before she walks to her groom.

Who are your clients?

My clients are real people like me and you. They are the couples, engaged or older. They are the bride and groom. They are the newlyweds. They are the expectant parents, before and after the birth. I would have to say my clients are the pre-married couples to the parents of very fresh newborns and those in between!

What should your mom clients expect when working with you?

If you are expecting, know that I was a midwife and doula for 6 years in the Philippines where both our kids were born. I know what its like. I have been there. 🙂 My mom clients should expect my heart. I always embrace my clients with my heart. I want them to be able to see and feel their hearts and what is so dear to their hearts through my portraits. And I always, always, always have fun. It’s my policy! 🙂

Anything else to add?

I love coffee, Italy, my several pairs of colourful Chuck Taylors. I love my husband and kids – more than anything in the world. I love simplicity. And chocolate… can’t forget dark chocolate. 🙂

  • Tracey, congratulations!! And the pictures in the article are sooooo good (good seems inadequate), so real, so full of meaning. God has given you a wonderful talent. May you be blessed in continuing to use your talent for the glory of God and pleasure of people.

  • Galing Talaga ^_^

I wrote PJ an email too but I’ll just say it here. You’re like my photo-hero!!

I’m not really into taking portraits (although I’m guessing its more because I’m not good at it, although I wish I were) but still, I love looking at your photos (especially when I need to see happiness).

“…I photograph life as it happens.”

Someday, I wanna be able to do that too ^_^
