Top Vancouver Family Dentists, A Q&A with Monarch Pediatric Dental Centre

What makes your practice unique?

As specialists in pediatric dentistry, we are trained to provide care to children and adolescents with special health care abilities and needs. We are adept in working with those who have anxiety issues and have specific equipment to work in the smaller mouths of our young patients.

We use child-friendly language to teach children what it means to visit the dentist and we take a family-centred approach to your child’s care. Family members are welcome to sit chair-side and be part of your child’s dental experience. We aim to make dental visits fun and happy experiences for all!

How do you keep nervous kids calm and focused during their dental visit?

Our staff are very patient and we work tailor our work based on each child’s comfort level. We work with each child to help them overcome what may be their specific challenges. For example, some children may require more communication and we do this by explaining and demonstrating before we begin a procedure. Other children may just need a little distraction and we have TVs set up over each chair for them to watch their favourite shows or cartoons. We always offer continual support and encouragement to let them know how awesome they are doing!

What special toys, activities do you have for kids?

All of our offices are equipped with iPads, interactive games and children’s toy stations around the office to help keep your children occupied while they are waiting. Each office is also decorated with nature-themed elements such as reconstructed real trees, hanging leaves/butterflies, fish tanks and First Nations art… there’s lots to see! At the end of the visit, each little visitor has a choice of stickers, toys and/or tokens for the toy machines to reward them for being awesome at the visit! When numbing is involved, we offer Freezies as a special treat for our little heroes.

Before I brought the boys to Monarch I was worried they’d be scared and develop fear of visiting the dentist like so many adults. I know I’ve made the right choice because the boys love coming to dentist, from the games and waiting area, through the check up and cleaning right down the the token reward at the end of the visit.” ~Stevie, Mom of little heroes Justin, 4 & Julian, 3

Give us a quick tip(s) on how to prepare their kids for a visit to the dentist?

We recommend brushing your child’s teeth twice a day, and if you’re already doing that, great job! You’re preparing them well to understand that having someone looking in their mouths and touching their teeth is not a threatening experience. Other things you can do are: let your child know in advance that they are going to see the dentist today. Be calm and positive and let us do the rest when they arrive. We will guide them through their journey as pleasantly as possible.
