Since Father’s Day is in June, we thought we’d mix things up a bit and highlight some fabulous guys this month. Up first is Jason Powell, the president and founder of Coco & Tini, an all-natural hair and bath care line for babies and kids.
What is your role in the company?
I’m the president/CEO and founder. I handle all the day-to-day business, as well as oversee product and brand development. In any start-up you wear a lot of hats, but I also have great people working with me on the marketing and social media fronts.
When did you start the company?
I started the company in August of 2010.
What were you doing before you opened your business?
I developed a professional line of salon and spa products, focused on natural-source ingredients. (Different company.)
What inspired you to start your company?
My wife and I were looking for bath products that we felt would be effective and safe to use on our son. With my previous experience in the personal products space, I found there was a definite lack of transparency in ingredient lists and too many synthetic or potentially harmful ingredients could be found in most of what was out there.
I really wanted to offer parents a natural product line that they could feel good about using.
What is your company all about?
Natural. Pure. Simple. Clean. Those were our guiding principles when we created Coco & Tini. As parents, we wanted to ensure that we only used gentle cleansing agents and ingredients derived from natural sources. All our products contain only 100% natural-source ingredients. We don’t use sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate, parabens, propylene glycol, artificial preservatives or artificial fragrances in any of our products.
We won’t use potentially harmful chemicals and synthetics in our products, when there are wonderful, natural alternatives that can do a better job and cause less harm to our environment.
We also want bath time to be fun! Coco & Tini products are meant to be spilled, sprayed, dropped, lathered and enjoyed by parents and their little ones.
What excites you about what you’re doing?
It’s been a tremendous experience creating the line and our characters and seeing the products out there. It’s an amazing feeling when you hear parents tell you that they (and their kids) love the products. That’s really the best part.
I also have to say that I’ve been blown away by how enthusiastic and supportive all our store owners have been. Great people- not a bad one in the bunch. It’s also exciting to be developing natural products at a time when it really feels like we’re reaching critical mass in terms of ingredient awareness.
What are some early examples of success?
We’re thrilled that we’ve been able to get into a lot of great retailers in B.C. and we’re into Alberta now as well, in what has really been a relatively short time. We’re also really happy with the reactions we’re getting to our branding and our characters. Kids really seem to recognize them which is fantastic.
What’s next for you?
We’re going to be adding some exciting new products to the line over the next few months and we’re hoping to expand into Eastern Canada and eventually into the U.S. We’re also looking to develop our characters more extensively.
