Lend a Helping Hand Over the Holiday Season

CKNW Orphans' Fund Holiday Season Give Back CharityWith the holiday season upon us, there are no shortage of ways to donate a little money to make someone else’s Christmas just a little brighter. From Salvation Army bell-ringers, to workplace toy drives, to food bank donation bins at the grocery store, to media events the need is great for many local families and Vancouverites are answering the call. One way that we have been answering the call for more than 60 years now is through the CKNW Orphans’ Fund. The organization’s annual pledge drive has been a Vancouver holiday fixutre for 36 years now, and the 2013 event is happening today – December 6, 2013. Between 5:30am and 7:00pm the drive will be happening live from the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

The CKNW Orphans’ Fund began as a way to support a New Westminster orphanage. While the fund no longer supports institutions like that orphanage, it remains dedicated to promoting the health and welfare of physically, mentally and socially challenged children, as well as BC kids who have been orphaned from society. They focus specifically on therapies, specialized equipment and bursaries.

The Needs of Children are Increasing Dramatically

“We have seen the needs of children increase dramatically over the last few years,” says Jen Schaeffers, Executive Director, CKNW Orphans’ Fund. “With BC having the highest rate of child poverty in Canada, it is imperative that our organization continues to support those vulnerable children who we often see slip through the cracks of other funding opportunities. With the backing of the community, we can continue to support their development and provide grants within a short time frame to those that need it the most.”

Vancouver’s business, media and music community have joined together to support this day. Some of the VIP guests include Juno award winning musician Dan Mangan, Vancouver Canucks Alumni Cliff Ronning, Kirk McLean and Pat Quinn, Chief Jim Chu and Mayor Gregor Robertson, among others. This BC tradition unofficially marks the kick off to the holiday season. It will be hosted by CKNW’s team of Jon McComb, Bill Good, Michael Campbell, Simi Sara, Mike Eckford and Sean Leslie.

Help Your Fellow Vancouver Moms This Holiday Season

Jen Schaeffers adds, “Many parents who are struggling financially are unaware that they can access individual grants for their child that might need something extra for their development. A lot of times we get comments, mostly from mothers, saying they wish they had heard of us sooner.” The work that the CKNW Orphans’ Fund is doing supports Vancouver moms, just like you. In fact, if your child needs extra support, you can visit their website to find out more about how to apply for a grant.

The fund raises all of its money during the annual pledge day event. If you’d like to choose the CKNW Orphans’ Fund as the place to donate a little bit of extra holiday cheer, call them before 7:00pm this evening at 604.222.9898, or visit their website where you can donate online.
