VM Picks: 2017 Summer Bucket List, a Q&A with Tourism Whistler

Who doesn’t want to hightail it to Whistler in the summer? A visit to the stunning resort isn’t just for the world famous slopes, Whistler has tons of things to do in the summer. We chatted with Helena Cox of  Tourism Whistler about the enduring appeal of a trip into the mountains over the summer.

Whistler Village

Give us a brief description of what you’re all about.

Whistler is the perfect destination for a summer family getaway from the Lower Mainland, with so much going on to entertain little ones of all ages. From healthy outdoor activities to chilled arts and crafts time, there’s always so much happening, and this July is the perfect time to visit with outdoor entertainment, festivals and celebrations of Canada’s 150th birthday.

What are three cool things kids (or families) can do there?

Celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday with a parade, free entertainment and festivities on July 1. Bring your blankets and enjoy music in the mountains at twilight with free outdoor concerts from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, July 1-2 from 8.30pm. Or check out Whistler Children’s Festival, July 7-9 which brings hands-on art workshops, crafts, theatre, multi-media, dance, music and magical performances to Whistler Olympic Plaza.

How should families prepare for their time there?

There’s so much to do in Whistler that your family will need more than just a daytrip to experience it all together, so be sure to book your accommodation in advance! Midweek is a great time to visit – check out whistler.com for some great accommodation deals including midweek stays from $125 per night.

Are there any special Canada 150 tie-ins, events, activities, specials or displays?

Head out with your family and explore Whistler with our Canada 150 themed scavenger hunt! Try to find at least 20 of the items listed on the scavenger hunt, take photos and remember to share them on social media, tagging @GoWhistler and using the hashtags #OnlyInWhistler and #Canada150. Then take your scavenger hunt form, and proof of your shared images, to the Whistler Visitor Centre for your Canada 150-themed prize!

Why should everyone put Whistler on their summer bucket list?

As well as all the fantastic events and entertainment on offer during July in Whistler, there are so many kid-friendly activities that must be on every family’s summer bucket list! Our pedestrian only village is perfect for strolling around, and the valley trail is great for cruisy bike rides. Or, head into the alpine to experience the world record breaking PEAK 2 PEAK gondola between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains – if you’re lucky you might even spot a bear! The lakes and beaches are beautiful in Whistler, creating lots of opportunity for fun in the water. If you’re traveling with older kids, check out some adventurous activities like ziplining or treetop adventures, or visit some of our cultural hotspots like the Audain Art Museum and Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre!
