G Day is Coming Back to Vancouver

Earlier this year we filled you in on the first-ever G Day, which happened here in Vancouver on April 28, 2014. We love what G Day stands for, so we’re thrilled to tell you that the event is coming back to our fair city. This time it’s happening November 2, 2014 at the Chan Centre for Performing Arts. All of this begs the question, however: what is G Day?

What is G Day?

g day for girls vancouverG Day is a global social movement for girls 10 to 12 years old. G Day organizes day-long events that emphasize self-esteem and leadership. The first event in April saw 250 girls and 80 adult speakers, volunteers, and artists get together for a day of female empowerment. The response from parents, volunteers and the girls themselves was so enthusiastic that it’s back. And this time, there’s something for the grown-ups, too.

Parents or guardians and family – including elder siblings, godparents, and other relatives – will have a chance to participate actively in G Day. Social entrepreneur and G Day founder Madeleine Shaw explains, “What’s new this time is the addition of programming for ‘Champions’ along with the girls for the final 90 minutes of the day. We’ll do some facilitated personal reflection, ceremonially welcome the girls, enjoy beautiful musical performances, and top it all off with a dessert reception.” Dessert? We’re in.

Empowering Girls

If you have a daughter – and even if you don’t – you’ve probably heard the statistics. According to Dove.ca, nearly half of Canadian girls between the ages of 10 and 17 have avoided social activities like going to the beach, participating in physical activities, going to school, or giving an opinion. Why? Because they feel badly about the way they look. G Day is a response. Ella, a participant at the April event, said, “G Day is really, really fun and awesome! I enjoyed learning about sisterhood and girl empowerment! It’s a day that you become inspired to be a better person and really take on leadership as a girl.”

Parents also noticed the positive effects that came from their daughters attending G Day. One parent shared, “G Day inspired, empowered and delighted my daughter, and expanded her self-concept. Since she attended G Day, we’ve had a deeper connection and more open dialogue about growing up, the power of being your true self, and embracing change. I’d love to see G Day in every city so that every girl can be celebrated on her journey to womanhood and experience for herself how supportive and loving sisterhood can be.”
