Joye MacPherson is an artist who creates one-of-a-kind stone jewellery. She is a passionate rider of vintage bicycles, mountain bikes, and soon-to-be motorcycles. In the last three years, she has learned how to play drums alongside her bass playing husband, and also performed in the play “Steel Magnolias” – her first-ever theatre production with her daughter. She has discovered that live arts and visual arts are a nice balance in life.
Why did you get into jewellery making?
As a lifelong artist, making jewellery was a natural progression for me. It became a career once my daughter was born and I chose jewellery making, and being at home with my children, over working outside the home and putting my children in daycare. It is a decision I have never regretted. Jewellery has taken me from crafts sales in church basements, to art festivals and wholesale gift shows, to my current place in life as a gallery owner.
Tell us a bit about your company.
Joye Designs Stone Art Jewellery came about when I incorporated my love of beautiful stones and my passion to create wearable art. My earlier emphasis on quartz crystal jewellery ev
olved into jewellery designs made with every kind of semi precious and fossil imaginable. For the last six years I have had a gallery in “Old Town” Port Moody, in a 1928 heritage house, where I create my designs as well as represent 20 other local jewellery designers. No imported jewellery and everything is made in B.C.
How would you characterize your style?
Wire wrapping the gemstones in gold and silver square wire is the format used in my jewellery designs. It is a technique that originated in Eygpt over 3000 years ago. Always keeping the stones in the designs as the focal point, the wire wrapping enhances their natural beauty, as opposed to competing with the stones. Every piece is one of a kind so some pieces are elegant and formal, others radiate with sparkle and bling.
Who are your clients?
People with a passion and appreciation for beautiful stones looking for unique jewellery. Some customers hand select stones from my collection and help design their piece, and others just come in and fall in love with something I have already created. Word of mouth is my greatest form of advertising as my jewellery speaks for itself.
What do you think moms should know about your jewellery?
My pendants are timeless and never go out of style. Once a pendant is selected I can make a selection of matching earrings and bracelets to choose from . If you need that perfect baby shower gift I make gold and silver baby bracelets ( I like to start my collectors young! ). I have a “Wishbook” for Moms, who really desire a piece of jewellery but can’t justify buying it for themselves. All they need to do is give my business card to that significant other and say “Joye knows what I like.”
Where can people buy your jewellery?
People can come to my gallery during business hours or they can book an appointment for a private evening. The gallery is open every day from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. My website is being updated as we speak and will be a wonderful place for home shoppers to spend some time once it is completed.
Anything else to add?
I do get to see my jewellery on Global Noon News every Friday on Bal Arneson who showcases her talent for cooking. I also had the pleasure of Deborah Hope and Jill Krop wearing my jewellery on the “Show Of Hearts” Variety Show on January 31, 2010.
