Choosing Your Next Family Vacation Destination

family vacation

Yesterday we shared tips for making a road trip with kids easier. We might have gotten a little bit ahead of ourselves, though. Before you think about how to make the drive as easy as possible, you need to decide where you want to go. If you’re still trying to pick your next family vacation destination, today we have tips.

1. Decide How Long You’re Going For

When it comes to planning a road trip, the biggest question is how long you have. If you have a weekend, you’ll want to stick a little closer to home so that your whole family vacation isn’t eaten up in the car. If you have two weeks, you may be willing to drive a little farther, if your kids are up for it. Or you may want to consider a road trip where you stop in multiple locations. Which leads us to …

2. Stay in One Place or Move Around?

If you have babies and toddlers then road-tripping around BC this summer is a little more challenging. Little ones who are restless in the car are probably only up for a drive to a single destination. If your kids are a little older, though, you might be up for a more driving-intensive family vacation. One way to make driving from place to place a little simpler is to travel by RV. You’ll be bringing everything with you, so you won’t have to pack and unpack at each destination.

3. Check out Travel Guides

You might think that you know BC like the back of your hand, but we bet there are a few family vacation destinations you’ve never heard of or considered. One great way to discover new road trip destinations is to check out travel guides. HelloBC.com has comprehensive destination about where to go and what to do all across the province. Lots of local travel sites have lots of information about what to see and do across BC as well. Check them out!

4. Look for Deals

For most of us, budget is a big consideration when planning a family vacation. While summer is the high season of tourism and prices go up, last-minute deals are often available as hotels and attractions attempt to fill in space. HelloBC.com has travel deal listings. BackyardBC offers deals on hotels and resorts to BC residents. Even Groupon sometimes has BC travel deals.

5. Make Sure Your Car is Good to Go

One final tip when planning a family road trip probably goes without saying: before you plan a big drive across the province, make sure your car is ready. While the story of how you broke down on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere might make for some laughs in years to come, it’s not exactly a happy vacation memory for most of us. Checking your fluids and tire pressure and all that jazz can help your family vacation to go as smoothly as possible.
