I’ve been wondering where all of my daughters’ underwear has been going – until it dawned on me that it must be lost at their daycare, unlabelled and unclaimed, pathetically waiting for the-mother-who-did-not-label-them to fish them out of the lost-and-found.

I am not a labeller of my children’s clothing. Part of the reason is that I know that the clothes, the backpacks and other belongings will be passed down from child to child, and it would be confusing to have another child’s name on your lunchbox. But it’s also something a bit deeper: being the youngest in a family of three and someone who wore hand-me-downs, I can’t help but think it might be a bit mortifying to wear a sweater with my older sister’s name on it. (Sorry sis!) Also, there seems something unstylish or just plain wrong about taking a pen to my kids’ clothes and scrawling their name on the tag.

Enter Emily Press Labels, a recently launched sticky label company that aims to design stylish yet durable labels for all ages – from kids to youths to grown-ups.

booklabelsI have three different packs: the Back to School Labels Pack for my oldest  daughter who is starting kindergarten this fall; the First Class School Pack for my preschooler; and a Slim Labels Pack with our last name so we can all use them. All of the labels are attractively organized in booklets, with brief instructions on what to use them for and how to apply them – whether for your child’s pencils, clothes or shoes.

The designs in the Kids Play collection are adorable. Each character has a special name and description, from Meechy the mischievous monkey who plays practical jokes to Tiggie the tiger who watches the world go by.

My husband jumps on the label-bandwagon right away. One morning, I find my husband showing the girls their lunchboxes adorned with their new labels. So Emily Press seems to have passed the first and most difficult test: my no-nonsense husband who is skeptical of anything that seems frilly, excessive or cumbersome. Emily Press’ labels also seem to have met my husband’s standards of form and function: ugly labels that didn’t stick or fit just wouldn’t have cut it.

My husband points to the cute illustration of a monkey on my older daughter’s label. My daughter is delighted since she understands the reference to her talent on the monkey bars. My younger daughter likes seeing her name on her lunchbox and picks it up to start carrying it around.

So Emily Press seems to have passed the second, but most important test: my kids.

I like that the sticky labels make labelling my kids’ belongings a snap. Gone are the days of iron-on patches that would ruin clothes if removed. These labels are easily applied to the washing instructions label, can withstand being laundered, and depending on the material that it’s applied to, can be removed with leaving little if any residue. So my youngest daughter will never have to be embarrassed by carrying her big sister’s backpack.

The Back to School Labels Pack, the First Class School Pack and a Slim Labels Pack have 200 labels altogether and cost about $115.
