Everything you Need to Know Before Starting Ultimate
Over the past two years, it feels like everyone blinked and then suddenly, Ultimate Frisbee became a thing. It appears to have popped out of seemingly nowhere and has grown exponentially since. While there are many reasons for this, one of the things that makes ultimate so easy to start is that it can be played from anywhere; beach grass and turf.
There’s no denying that our Elevate Ultimate coaches bring the hype but if you’re looking to get started on your own all you need to know is these eight things:
- Equipment: a pair of runners or cleats, water, and a disc. Yes, it’s that simple!
- Spirit of the game: The core of Ultimate Frisbee is Spirit of the Game, which places the responsibility for fair play on the players. Competition is encouraged, but never at the cost of safety, respect, and enjoyment of the game.
- Starting the Play: Each point in the game begins with both teams lining up on the front of opposite end zone lines. Next, the defense throws (or ”pulls”) the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven players per team in play at a time.
- Scoring: Each time the offense catches a pass in the defense’s end zone, the offense scores a point. The teams switch direction after every goal, and the next point begins with a new pull by the team that just scored.
>> What Sets Ultimate Apart From Other Sports
- Movement of the disc: The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc has 10 seconds to throw and pass to a teammate.
- Non-Contact: Players must attempt to avoid physical contact during play. Picks and screens are also not allowed.
- Fouls: A foul occurs when a player initiates contact that affects the play. When a foul causes a player to lose possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player that the foul was called against disagrees with the foul call, the play is re-done.
- Self Officiating: Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes with each other.
