Where to Eat in Vancouver: The Waldorf Hotel and Cafe Nuba

Article by Michelle Gadd, who has the scoop on where to eat in Vancouver.
As a parent, I don’t believe my choice of where to eat in Vancouver should be limited to chain restaurants with plastic playgrounds. My husband and I made the deliberate decision to raise our children in an urban environment in order to give them an appreciation for the variety of cultural opportunities the city has to offer–from flavourful food to fine art.
Where to Eat in Vancouver: Cafe Nuba
The Waldorf Hotel on Hastings Street recently went through a major renovation resulting in a complex that boasts 30 rooms, Cafe Nuba, a Tiki bar (keeping with its original theme), a hair salon, a gift shop, a nightclub and a live music venue. Clearly, The Waldorf Hotel is not meant to be a glorified Chuck E. Cheese’s and caters to grown-up clientele. However, Cafe Nuba is prepared for little visitors. Lunch is served from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm and dinner begins at 5:00 pm–early enough to get the kidlets home for bedtime. There are also baby chairs and booster seats available and plenty of food options that are toddler- and child-friendly.
My husband and I recently ate at Cafe Nuba, which serves up authentic Lebanese cuisine. Although we were there for a work function and were toddler-free, I was pleased to see a young family at the next table. We began our meal with a tray of appetizers that included the most amazing crispy cauliflower I’ve ever tasted. Our entrees were lamb stew and vegan meshwi–either of which could have been easily shared with our 19-month-old son. The food was flavourful but not too spicy and very reasonably priced. An added bonus: ingredients are organic, local when available, and hand-selected for freshness on a daily basis. All of Cafe Nuba’s meats are free-range, hormone-free and non-medicated.
Cafe Nuba’s menu and price list is available for viewing online.
Overall, I would recommend The Waldorf Hotel for a hip-happening date night with your SO to allow yourself the opportunity to check out the entire complex. However, if you don’t have a babysitter but do have a hankering for some yummy Lebanese food in a funky environment, this is a great choice for where to eat in Vancouver, plus you’ll get a cultural experience out of it.
