Matchstick Coffee Roasters: Vancouver Coffee Shop for Serious Coffee Lovers
Since their opening back in January of 2012 Matchstick Coffee Roasters has upped the ante for Vancouver coffee lovers on the East Side. Owners Spencer Viehweger, Annie Viehweger and Aaron Braun spent months renovating the space, adding white subway tiles behind the bar, light wood paneled walls and polished concrete floors (check out their blog for before, during and after photos). They have created a cafe with a clean, hip aesthetic and lots of open space. Terrariums sprinkled here and there with 70s tunes played on vinyl create a unique feel while still managing to have a homey atmosphere. The focal point in the room is a large communal table cut from one massive slab of a tree where patrons sit and chat elbow to elbow.
Vancouver Coffee Shop Respects the Bean
Taking the love of good coffee a step further, Matchstick focuses on single-origin beans to bring out the impact of terroir on the flavours of the coffee. When you go to the bar, you’ll be presented with tasting notes: this is not just a choice of dark or light roast. Your coffee will be brewed with a glass carafe, hand poured to ensure the water filters through all of the ground beans.
At the moment, Matchstick is making their coffee with beans from Calgary’s Phil and Sebastian. However, once they get their roastery operation up and running, you’ll be able to buy Matchstick’s signature single-origin beans custom-roasted on premises. It’s Vancouver coffee for Vancouver coffee lovers.
Not Just Coffee
If you don’t happen to be a coffee drinker, there is a small selection of teas on offer, as well as hot chocolate and steamed milk. If you want an alternative to dairy in your coffee beverage, almond milk is your option, a refreshing change from the ubiquitous soy milk. You’ll also find sandwiches using lovely bread stuffed with Save-On Meats, as well as some delicious pastries from Matchstick’s baker, including croissants and pain au chocolat baked fresh each morning. For those of you who are not early risers, like me, you’re in luck: the croissants aren’t usually ready until around 10:00 am.
Matchstick Coffee Roasters is conveniently located next to Robson Park, for some post-coffee play for the little ones. They’re open seven days a week from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.
