VM Picks: 2022 Summer Camps for Kids: Q & A With Camp Monarch

Do you have a musical theatre performer in the house? Camp Monarch is an annual two-week summer day camp for kids with a genuine interest in music, art, dance and musical theatre. They embrace the Orff-Schulwerk approach, which combines music, movement, drama, and speech in their lessons, similar to a child’s world of play. If your child is passionate about musical theatre, they won’t want to miss it!

Camp Monarch combines music, movement, drama, and fine art into lessons similar to a child’s world of play; we encourage campers to explore, create, and improvise. Campers have daily sessions in music, art, dance and theatre, culminating in a lively performance of tales from around the world. Our instructors are all respected professionals in their field and bring a wealth of creating and performing experience to Monarch. This year, to celebrate our 20th year of Camp Monarch, we will be documenting the Monarch butterfly’s life cycle with some comedic commercial interruptions!

What Makes Your Camp Unique?

Our camp is a fully immersive art experience. Campers are the creative force behind all aspects of the camp show, creating sets, props and costumes, performing live instrumental accompaniments, singing, dancing, acting, and contributing to a fine art exhibit. The children have a sense of pride in their accomplishments when they see their hard work and creativity come together in the performance at the end of the two weeks.

Campers will pick up a few new moves in dance, explore their singing voices and rhythmic skills in music, find their character in theatre and discover new techniques in art. Even more importantly, they will be inspired to challenge themselves, take risks and work collaboratively.

What kind of feedback have you received about your camp?

Here is what two happy campers have to say:

It’s a really good musical camp. It’s acting, dancing, art-making, music and the most fun ever! I like that everyone gets to be a part of everything we do.”

Luna, age 8 (this will be her 5th year).

It’s a really fun camp where you get to do many things, and you can also make new friends. It’s always great to do the play at the end!”

Zach, age 12 (this will be his 6th year at Monarch!).
