Family friendly summer theatre in the park

There are loads of summer outdoor movies and concerts in Vancouver, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t shout out the live theatre going on around town. Here are three big-kid friendly productions happening in spectacular settings outside or in the big tent. Get ocean views at Rob Basford Park on Granville Island and Bard on the Beach at Vanier Park or sit amid the towering firs of Stanley Park at Malkin Bowl for a toe-tapping musical. Protip: Bring a sweater as it can get chilly as the sun sets.

For a perfect mid-summer’s eve, head to this whimsical tale about friendship, mischief and magic at the outdoor amphitheatre on Granville Island with False Creek as backdrop. The show featuring actors from Carousel Theatre’s Teen Shakespeare Program, who are part of a 6-week intensive pre-professional training program under the mentorship of professional directors, actors and choreographer. The show is FREE, but you can reserve seats for a mere $6.

Bard on the Beach Family Night

Nothing compares to live theatre. Book tickets for Family Night at the Bard on the Beach this July or August. Arrive at the village early for family-friendly activities, the PIXSTAR photobooth, a food truck and an exclusive pre-show talk designed just for kids. Then enjoy a performance of the joyful, romantic comedy, As You Like It, filled with Beatles songs! It’s worth noting that the show doesn’t end until 10 pm, and this is Shakespearean English, so you know best whether your smallest people will be content to sit through the whole thing. Family Nights are on July 24th and August 21st.

For the non-squirmers in the family, head over to the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park for a live performance of Broadway blockbusters Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella and 42nd Street from July 4th to August 18th. Tickets start at $20 (PS: Save $5 off tickets until June 16) but bring a few extra bucks and take advantage of their concession heaven. Cheeseburgers, barbecue, sushi and even wine – need we say more?
