Do you have a musical theatre performer in the house? Camp Monarch is an annual two-week summer day camp for kids with a genuine interest in music, art, dance and musical theatre. They embrace the Orff-Schulwerk approach, which combines music, movement, drama, and speech in their lessons, similar to a child’s world of play. If your child is passionate about musical theatre, they won’t want to miss it!

What is the mission and philosophy of your summer camp, and how does it align with Vancouver parents’ needs?
At Camp Monarch, our mission is to nurture each child’s creativity and self-confidence through an inclusive, process-focused approach to the arts. We believe that all children are artists and our job is to provide the space, tools, and encouragement for them to express themselves freely and without pressure. Camp Monarch parents appreciate that we provide a warm, welcoming environment where children are supported by professional teachers who truly care. Whether a child is bold or shy, imaginative or methodical, they find belonging and inspiration at Camp Monarch.
What sets your camp apart from others in the area?

We’ve been inspiring young artists for over 20 years, and many of our campers return year after year—some even becoming leaders and assistant instructors themselves. What makes us different is our focus on art for the joy of it. Our days are filled with music, dance, theatre, and visual art, and we emphasize creativity over perfection. We prioritize artistic exploration, friendship, play and personal growth. It’s summer camp the way it should be: imaginative, fun, and deeply meaningful.
Our music program is grounded in the Orff-Schulwerk approach, which blends movement, storytelling, singing, and instrument playing to make music accessible and joyful for all children. Campers explore rhythm and melody using xylophones, drums, and small percussion instruments, often collaborating to create soundscapes that bring stories from around the world to life. Whether they’re drumming a West African folktale or layering melodies for a Japanese legend, children are immersed in a rich, playful experience that connects music to culture, creativity, and community.
Can you provide an overview of the activities and programs your camp offers during summer camp, and how they contribute to children’s development?

Each day at Camp Monarch includes hands-on classes in four disciplines: visual art, music, theatre, and dance. Children rotate through all four areas, guided by passionate instructors who are also working artists and educators. This multidisciplinary approach builds confidence, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Campers get to experiment, make mistakes, try new things, and celebrate their individuality. It’s the kind of summer experience that lights a creative spark and helps kids develop both socially and emotionally.
Share success stories or testimonials from previous participants and their parents. How have children benefited from your camp?
We’ve had countless families tell us that Camp Monarch is the highlight of their child’s summer—and for many, the highlight of their year. One parent recently told us, “My daughter came home each day bursting with stories and ideas. She’s always been creative, but Camp Monarch gave her the confidence to really express herself.” Another shared, “It’s rare to find a program that honours kids’ imagination the way Monarch does. My son felt safe, seen, and inspired.”
For returning campers, we often hear about how they’ve grown in their ability to collaborate, advocate for their ideas, and take creative risks. These are skills they carry with them long after the summer ends.
