What to do in Vancouver: Valentine’s Day for Grown-Ups

This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Tuesday, which is not the most convenient day for those of us who need to deal with the logistics of going out on a school night. Who says that you need to go out on Valentine’s Day, though? Here are five suggestions for what to do in Vancouver for a downtown date night any time of year.

A Different Kind of Movie Night

Tired of the multiplex? Get your art house on at Pacific Cinemateque and see the Eisenstein movie you’ve been pretending to know about since you dated that film major in university. With constantly changing programming of new releases, classics, and hard to find masterpieces, have a grown-up night out watching something not made by Pixar.

Unleash Your Inner Picasso

For a more tactile experience (and no subtitles), try sharing a canvas at Raw Canvas, a Yaletown lounge and wine bar with a side of artistic expression. Enjoy their tasting menu, have a few drinks, and try your hand at creating your own masterpiece with the paints and brushes they provide. Date Night evenings every Wednesday get you a medium sized canvas for the price of a small. It’s what to do in Vancouver for some creative, grown-up fun. Reservations recommended.

Art Appreciation

Don’t want to get paint on your clothes, but still in an artistic frame of mind? Head to one of the Vancouver Art Gallery’s Fuse nights. They’re the furthest thing imaginable from a regular gallery tour: live performances,  music, DJs, and other unexpected fun fill the gallery’s spaces on select Fridays. The next event is Friday, February 24th. Free for gallery members, $17.50 for non-members.

  • Try the 1927 Lobby Lounge (named after the year the original Hotel Georgia was built) at the Rosewood Hotels’ reinvention of this classic Vancouver spot. Grab a nightcap after your trip to the Cinemateque, where you can both laugh that you didn’t get that surrealist film you saw at all.

  • Leave all thoughts of the kids behind at Xi Shi Lounge at the Shangri-La Hotel. Enjoy some live music and cocktails in this intimate space in Vancouver’s tallest building.

  • Drop in to the Fairmont Hotel Pacific Rim’s Lobby Lounge and Terrace and listen to some contemporary live music in this cool modern space. Want quiet? Check out Giovane Cafe, which transforms from a busy deli and cafe during the day to sophisticated wine bar at night. If sweets are what’s on your mind, stop in at Bella Gelateria for a chocolato – a kind of hot chocolate float. You choose milk or dark hot chocolate, and what flavour of gelato you want in it. Bliss.

Skip Dinner, Head Straight for Dessert

Dinner, movie, drinks? That’s a lot of babysitting hours – maybe you need to get right to the good stuff. If that’s your style, reserve a table at the Sutton Place Hotel’s famous Chocoholic Buffet on every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and dive right into cakes, pastries, pies, ice creams, and crepes. Sometimes efficiency’s the thing when you’re wondering what to do in Vancouver on date night.
