Leah Alexandra’s inspiration comes from her many summers spent on the sandy shores of Cape Cod. Leah worked as a jewellery buyer for a small boutique while studying fashion design at Ryerson University and discovered opportunities to purchase exotic gemstones from around the world. By the time she graduated, people were lining up to place orders for her designs. Relocating to Vancouver, she furthered her education by enrolling in a metalsmithing course and, later, a four-month internship with a local German goldsmith. Now Hollywood celebrities are wearing her designs.
Why did you get into jewellery design?
My company was born from a passion for stones. From a young age, I can remember being fascinated by the rocks I would find along the water’s edge. Seven years ago I was working as a buyer for a small boutique, and upon attending tradeshows began to come across importers of turquoise stones. I was immediately inspired to make jewellery. It was then, having access to the stones that I created my first collection. In addition to being self-taught I followed that with a course at Vancouver Community College and an internship with a local goldsmith.
Tell us a bit about your company.
The jewellery is lovingly handmade in my home-studio, a short walk away from the beach. We do two seasonal collections per year. Materials used include sterling silver, 14 karat gold fill, and high quality, carefully selected semi-precious gemstones and freshwater pearls.
How would you characterize your style?
Classic, versatile, timeless, with a little boho-chic. The jewellery offers an organic elegance that combines luxury and wearability with the highest standards of craftsmanship.
Who are your clients?
My jewellery appeals to a wide range of tastes and age groups. I know 18-year-olds that go just as crazy for it as a more discerning 65-year-old woman – and of course everyone in between!
Actresses such as Jessica Alba and Kerry Washington have also worn Leah Alexandra. I work closely with the film industry since so many Hollywood movies are filmed in Vancouver and have made jewellery for several feature films and TV series.
What do you think moms should know about your jewellery?
The aesthetic of Leah Alexandra jewellery is effortless and fresh. This appeals to many moms who want stylish but everyday looks that are not distracting but complements their inner and outer beauty. The stones widely used in the jewellery, such as clear topaz, labradorite, champagne citrine and pearls, are very neutral and will work with any ensemble. I have a few locket necklaces in my collection that moms find very meaningful to wear with a photo of their little ones inside.
Where can people buy your jewellery?
In Vancouver you can find it at all seven Blue Ruby locations. Also, in Victoria at Violette Veldor and in Kelowna at Posh Gallery. I am currently working on a website where customers will be able to shop online.
Anything else to add?
I love designing pieces that make a statement, but when you put them on, they become an extension of yourself. Layering several bracelets and bangles might make you feel invincible like Wonder Woman or a delicate pair of earrings might help you feel sophisticated and chic. Each piece comes in both gold fill or silver.
