Harriet’s favourite spots around Vancouver
Central Park
Miles of gravel trails through the rainforest, son on bike, us on foot. This park boasts, creeks, wooden bridges, two duck ponds and two playgrounds. In the summer, there’s a spray park and an outdoor pool. And let’s not forget the amusing exercise machines.
3883 Imperial Street, Burnaby
Rocky Mountain Flatbread
Delicious gooey pizza made with loads of local and organic ingredients. Kids play kitchen area. Excellent wine list. Sunday pizza making for kids. Only caveat: busy on weekends.
4186 Main Street, Vancouver, 604-566-9779
Killarney Lake, Bowen Island
Easy 4 km lake loop through the green, green forest. Kids run and play their way through the trees. Take a break at the pebble beach to have a snack, skip rocks and admire the shimmering lily pads. >> Best of Bowen
Mountainview Cemetery
Not just for the dearly departed. A gigantic park with mountain and city vistas. Cherry blossoms in the spring, wildflowers in the summers, orange leaves in the autumn. Perfect for bike riding, scootering, jumping, running and strollering.
5455 Fraser St, Vancouver, (604) 325-2646
Eastside Fitness
Friendly neighbourhood fitness studio – an unpretentious gem on Fraser St. For a good sweat, there’s Fitcamp or UGI and on Sunday morning, a little yoga to bring things down in good way. Plus … post-workout taro bubble tea or samosas and chai are just down the street.
5854 Fraser St, Vancouver, (604) 568-1224
Olympic Village
A latte from Terra Breads while son climbs the giant birds or the red lights or leaps across wooden platforms. Rock throwing into the ocean off the squared off rocks. Hinge park for watery chute fun and parkour in the hollowed out metal train tunnel. If all goes well, a beer on the Tap & Barrel patio caps a perfect day.
Grub
Night out! Newly renoed Grub offers up some of the freshest, tastiest food around. Still savoring the meaty yet light Arctic char, tender homemade squash ravioli and fresh mixed green beans. Exquisite wines. Funky wallpaper. #goodeats

Erin McGann is the former Managing Editor for Vancouver Mom and Toronto Mom Now. She drinks just a bit too much coffee, is a bit obsessed about sourcing local food, plays the cello moderately well, spends too much time on Twitter, keeps honeybees on a rooftop, and has a thing for single-malt whisky. Erin is working on a novel set in turn-of-the-century Vancouver, which her husband, son and dog have to hear about all the time, and also blogs at Erin at Large.
