Flashdance and Following Your Dreams
Flashdance – The Musical, the stage adaptation of the 1983 hit film that defined a generation, will perform at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre here in Vancouver from November 11-16, 2014. The story revolves around electrifying dance, telling the inspiring and unforgettable story of Alex Owens. She’s a Pittsburgh steel mill welder by day and a bar dancer by night, and over the course of the play she learns the meaning of love and its power to fuel the pursuit of her dream of becoming a professional performer. The original Paramount Pictures film was a worldwide smash that quickly became a pop culture phenomenon. Its hit songs became Top Ten hits on the radio around the world – in fact, if you are a child of the 80s you probably know them. It’s a very popular show, so be sure to get your tickets ASAP at ticketmaster.ca.
Following Your Dreams
Earlier this month we ran a giveaway for two tickets to opening night on November 11. Congratulations to Dan, who won! As part of the contest we asked you how you’re following your dreams, or encouraging your kids to follow theirs. Today we’re sharing some of our favourite answers. Here’s what you had to say:
Hubby and I encourage our kids to not be shy about things they are passionate about. We celebrate our talents, skills and passions through encouragement and involvement. Dance is a big one in our house so all three girls are enrolled in classes and we allow them to chose which type of dance they wish to pursue based on their interests and loves. ~ Bruna
I just started running to keep fit for both my body and mind. I suffered from postpartum depression and with keeping fit have managed to wean off anti-depressants. I want my girls to have a positive role model when it comes to fitness and mental health. I have a 10k run at the end of this month! ~ Shannon
Now that my youngest is in kindergarten I am focusing on my dreams by becoming a childbirth educator. I became a doula about a year ago and am looking forward to taking on more clients and developing a business. It took a long time for me to feel that I could turn the focus off my family and put my career in the forefront and I’m really looking forward to having that for myself. ~ Lisa
I encourage my children to believe that they are capable of anything if they work hard and try their best. I never want them to feel that they cannot achieve whatever they desire. ~ Tracey
I always wanted to be a rock star. As an adult that seems a bit impractical, but I am a member of two bands and play in public weekly with some very talented musicians. I’m having a blast! ~ Dan
