Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra Celebrates 95 Years of Music and Community

The Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra (VYSO) is marking an incredible milestone this year—95 years of musical excellence! Since 1930, the VYSO has been a cornerstone of youth music education in British Columbia, nurturing the talents of young musicians aged 8 to 18. And now, the organization is pulling out all the stops with a spectacular 95th Anniversary Concert on Sunday, May 18 at 2 PM at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Vancouver.

A Grand Celebration: 280 Young Musicians on One Stage

This isn’t just any concert—it’s a full-scale celebration of the VYSO’s legacy. All four orchestra divisions will come together in one unforgettable performance featuring 280 musicians, offering families a rare opportunity to witness the full range of Vancouver’s most historic youth orchestra.

From the Debut and Junior Orchestras to the Intermediate and Senior divisions, this event showcases the remarkable talent and dedication of youth from all corners of Metro Vancouver.

Special Guest: Alumna Joanna G’froerer Returns to the Stage

Returning to her musical roots, Joanna G’froerer, Principal Flutist of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra—and proud VYSO alumna—will perform Flute Concerto, Op. 8 by Otar Gordeli with the Senior Orchestra. Joanna’s performance carries extra emotional weight, as she is the daughter of the late Brian G’froerer, a beloved VYSO alum and former brass coach with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Program Rich in Music, Meaning, and Legacy

Under the direction of Artistic Director Jonathan Girard, the program promises something for everyone. Highlights include:

  • “Coast Salish Anthem” (arranged by William Rowson), performed by Debut and Junior Orchestras – a heartfelt tribute to Indigenous musical traditions.
  • “Theme from How to Train Your Dragon” – a whimsical, family-favourite film score that young attendees will love.
  • “Sky Chase” by Bramwell Tovey, written especially for the VYSO, will be performed by the Intermediate and Senior Orchestras.

The concert will be introduced by none other than Christopher Gaze, acclaimed theatre actor and director, adding a special touch of storytelling magic to the event.

More Than Music: Building Friendships and Confidence

According to Ashton Lim, Executive Director of the VYSO, “Our 95th anniversary is not just a celebration of our rich history, but a testament to the enduring impact the VYSO has on young musicians and the greater Vancouver community. It’s about more than music—it’s about building lifelong friendships, learning discipline, and nurturing creativity.”
