Top Summer Camps in Vancouver: The Stage Musical Theatre Academy
What is the mission and philosophy of your summer camp, and how does it align with Vancouver parents’ needs?

The Stage Musical Theatre Academy’s mission is to unlock the courage and resilience in all our students so that they may achieve their highest potential in the arts and in life. Performing arts education, particularly when introduced in a consecutive, daily schedule like a camp, has shown time and time again to boost students’ confidence, help them make friends and encourages them to speak up and be heard while be supported by their teachers and friends.
What sets your camp apart from others in the area?

This is an incredibly well rounded camp. The whole day is spent creating whether that’s during drama games, dance play, singing activities, set painting, props making and imaginative play during our daily lunch breaks. The day is well paced so that students don’t fatigue quickly and the energy and excitement actually builds as the week progresses closer to a live performance of a mini-musical complete with a sprinkling of costumes and the students set and props creations showcased on the final day. They even get their own lobby display with their headshot and bios like in a professional show! The theme also changes each week so students can collect all kinds of new stories and experiences over the summer.
Can you provide an overview of the activities and programs your camp offers during summer camp, and how they contribute to children’s development?

Speaking more generally, and trying not to make this a full dissertation, participating in artistic programs awakens who we are as people. Dancing (and outdoor play!) teaches us how to operate our body, the only thing in this world that is truly ever our own. It connects us with the vehicle that will literally guide us through our entire lives and teaches us to trust it, to listen to it, to honour it, and to keep it safe. Singing, my goodness, the benefits of singing are endless. What a gift to be able to share your unique sound to a group of people, to allow your voice your fill up space and be heard and supported. It helps us connect with a level of vulnerability that keeps us humble, empathetic and compassionate. Acting gives us a chance to think about the journey of others, to keep play and silliness in our hearts which prevents the stunting of creativity and joy, it helps reflect on our own values as we discuss those of the characters. Not to mention, like singing, it gives us the confidence, and the righteous audacity to step forward and be heard. What a powerful tool for young people to develop so early. Put a group of people together who are all experiencing these powerful benefits and you will find strong friendships being made as you connect and support each other. The best part about all of this, is that while all of this is going on, students just think they’re having a fantastic time and putting on a show!
Share success stories or testimonials from previous participants and their parents. How have children benefited from your camp?
