Mom the Vote: Mock Election Results

As you may have noticed, we’ve been spending the weeks leading up to tomorrow’s provincial election encouraging you to get out and mom the vote. With less than 24 hours until polls open across BC, now is the time to inform yourself and get ready to vote, if you haven’t already.

Mock Election Questions

Last week, we thought it would be fun to hold a mock election of our own. We asked you two questions:

[unordered_list style=”bullet”]
  • Which party does the candidate you’re voting for belong to?
  • Which party do you think will win the election?

Mock Election Results

Our mock election polls have now closed. The votes are completely anonymous – we don’t know who weighed in. They’re also not scientific at all, and should be viewed only as an exercise in seeing how Vancouver moms compare to pundits and pollsters. Here are how the results turned out:

[unordered_list style=”bullet”]
  • 63% of you said that you were voting NDP, and 38% said you were voting Liberal. (We know that the numbers add up to more than 100% – it’s those darned rounding errors.)
  • As to who will win, 71% of you predict the NDP will emerge victorious tomorrow evening, and 29% are betting on the Liberals.

Mom the Vote Controversy

One of the things that surprised us was the negative reaction we received from some respondents. On our poll we had checkboxes for not only the NDP and Liberals, but also the Conservatives and Greens, as well as an “Other” option. Several people chose “Other” and then left a comment expressing their displeasure that we’ve become overly political, or suggesting that we were selling the responses to our informal, un-scientific poll.

We can assure that, in fact, we were not selling the responses. We had less than 20 responses in total, and as they were completely anonymous and unscientific, the results would be of little use to any political party or group. As for the politicization of VancouverMom.ca, our aim with mom the vote is simply to encourage you to get informed and make your own decision. We don’t endorse any parties or candidates. We simply believe that savvy moms who love where they live want to get engaged with what’s happening, and that means taking the time to mom the vote.

If you need help figuring out when, where or how to vote, visit the Elections BC website. They can fill you in on everything you need to know, including how to register at the polling station if you’re not already on the voter list. We’ll see you at the polls!
