Have you got a lot of home improvement projects on your to-do list for 2012? Though it’s still cheaper than hiring a handyman, do it yourself projects can get expensive fast when you need to buy tools to complete them. Then, once the project is finished, are you ever going to use that thing again? If you’ve tried renting from places like Home Depot or Rona, you’ve likely found that it can be pricey if you can’t get it all done in one day.
Do it Yourself at the Vancouver Tool Library
The latest addition to the do it yourself landscape in East Vancouver is the Vancouver Tool Library. As the name implies, it’s like a library for tools: you buy a $20 share to join, then pay an annual maintenance fee of $30 and you can borrow tools for free! Rentals are for up to five days, which gives you plenty of time to do most small home improvement projects. The Vancouver Tool Library has an inventory of all their tools online, so you can see if they have what you need.
The Vancouver Tool Library is committed to environmental sustainability through helping people improve their homes, bikes and gardens. The library is a member-owned cooperative, which means that as a member, you are an owner. You have a say in how it’s run and what new tools they add to the inventory each month. The library will be also be offering workshops to members so you can expand your do it yourself skills. If you have some knowledge you’d like to share, consider volunteering for the Vancouver Tool Library. Lead a workshop or help sign out tools to members at the shop. If you have any decent tools that you’re not using, contact the Vancouver Tool Library to donate. Check out their blog for members’ projects, upcoming events and other ways you can get involved.
When you do become a member, the tool library has a referral bonus going on until the end of February: you’ll get an extra month free added onto your membership for any family member or friend you refer. The Vancouver Tool Library is open Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, and Tuesday and Thursday 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
