Spring has sprung, blossoms are in bloom and your shadow grows taller by the day. You’ve got reason to prettify yourself with an on-trend outfit, get the kids out the door and head off in search of a scrumptious local brunch spot. There are so many family friendly breakfast restaurants to enjoy that we’ve rounded up some of our top picks!
1. Nelly’s Grill
Located in the heart of Kitsilano, this family owned restaurant, previously known as Joe’s Grill, feels like home away from home thanks to its down to earth, family friendly vibes. Pre-covid, kids were provided with crayons and coloring books although the single serve creamers proved to be great stacking blocks. The kids menu will not disappoint with generous portions fit for little kings and queens.
2. Their There Cafe
This quaint little gem will satisfy both parents and children alike, with mouth watering pastries and satiating coffees. This spot is on the smaller side with an outdoor boulevard directly opposite the cafe. Recently, the side-street at the end of the block has been blocked off to traffic and converted into an outdoor picnic area. If both options are full, opt for take out and head to Delmont Park or down to the beach. Be warned, the shop has more than just tasty treats. You can also pick up unique snacks, books and home and lifestyle items. You may leave with more than just treats!
3. Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe
Since 1988 Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe has been collecting and displaying unique decor and original artwork from national and international artists. You will also find vintage toys and memorabilia. The menu boasts a variety of classic and comfort foods ranging from Greek and Mexican fusion dishes to classic bennies. There is an excellent kids menu for the younger ones, so you don’t have to worry about your picky eaters.
4. Aphrodite’s Organic Cafe
If you love pie, you will love this spot. Boasting farm-to-table fare, Aphrodites Founder Allan Christian had a vision of bringing goodness of the farm to people in the city through an organic pie shop. What started as a pie shop has become a restaurant with organic fresh vegetables harvested from the farm and served same day fresh. The cozy warm atmosphere is enough to make you feel at home, or like you are back in grandma’s kitchen.
5. Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant
In the mood for something other than bacon and eggs? Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant is a long-standing Chinese seafood restaurant in Vancouver, serving authentic, refined Cantonese cuisine such as handcrafted dim sum, premium live seafood, traditional Hong Kong style barbeque pork, and its world-renowned roasted squab.
Gather together with friends and family with the family style sharing platters served in the middle of the table on a lazy susan, that alone will have the kids entertained amongst the happy chaos of chatter and head turning dishes.
6. Bâtard
Bâtard Boulangerie & Café Moderne is a French style Bakery, Café and Grocer owned by the Born family and inspired from their travels in Europe. Known for their fresh baked breads and pastries made on site, there is also an epicerie stocked with pickled vegetables, jams and baking accessories. In the store you will also find farmhouse style tables where you can sit and enjoy bistro-style food while your little one devours their pastries. Don’t forget to order them a milk hot chocolate to dip their kouign amann in.
7. Egg & Co.
Along Fraser Street in East Vancouver, Egg & Co. will have all your breakfast egg-ssentials covered, from egg benedicts to black truffle and mushroom toast or the Egg & Co. breakfast (big boy size 4+). On Mondays, mimosas are on special for five bucks and on pasta Tuesdays, enjoy the breakfast carbonara and truffle carbonara special.
8. Prado
A little further down Fraser street you will find Cafe Prado with some delicious coffee and sweet treats available. Indoors there is seating by their feature green moss wall as well outdoor patio seating along the sidewalk. Embark on a family bike ride, park your bikes outside and enjoy!
9. Belgard Kitchen
Belgard Kitchen is located on the edge of Gastown at the Settlement Building in the Railtown Design District. You can’t miss it with its magnificent floor to ceiling wooden door. A sister company to Vancouver Urban Winery, and craft brewery Settlement Brewing, Belgard kitchen was inspired by the West Coast lifestyle; a passion for fresh, local food, BC VQA wine, and craft beer and cider. The mouth watering menu will make family sharing style a no-brainer, so that kids can pick the ‘best’ part of the dish while parents enjoy an array of flavors. Colouring pages and pencils are also provided for the young diners.
10. Medina Cafe
This highly sought after spot will make you feel like you are dining in a 5-star hotel, but with the space and comfort of your nan’s kitchen. Order the Wolves Breakfast for Two with extra sides from the menu and have a feast of a breakfast for the family to devour. The Lavender Latte is a must try if lattes are your thing and make sure you order a few more Liège style waffles for the youngsters crashing your brunch with a topping of their choice, so they don’t steal yours.
