Elysian Coffee: Awesomeness in a Cup
Coffee seems to be a local Vancouver pastime. I love coffee and I am always on the hunt for the perfect cup.
So it’s no surprise that I would adore Elysian Coffee. Located at Broadway and Ash (with another location also at 5th and Burrard), Elysian Coffee serves up the perfect cuppa Joe that’s sure to satisfy any coffee connoisseur.
My friend and I arrive at 9:30 along with the last of the morning coffee rush. I couldn’t decide what to order, and finally chose on a coffee brewed in one of their Clovers, a specialty machine that brews drip coffee one cup at a time – and which is apparently so special that in 2008 Starbucks purchased Clover’s manufacturer the Coffee Equipment Company. When I ask the the staff what the difference is between the two lighter coffees, the response includes enough words like “body” and “acidity” for me to believe that the barista knows what he’s talking about.
The pastry case is filled with all sorts of goodies, including about four types of muffins. Since I spy someone walking into the backroom with a huge tray of eggs, I imagine that the pastries are made on the premises.
My friend’s cappuccino, while tasty and well made, is so small – maybe around six ounces – that he downs it within a few minutes. In comparison, my coffee comes in a French press carafe, which is large enough for a couple of top-ups in my enormous coffee cup. I enjoy a few sips unadulterated with cream and sugar, but since I’m not at a coffee tasting and am there simply to enjoy a cup and company, I go ahead and pour in the fixin’s.
As for children, my baby is the only one in sight and I don’t see any high chairs or booster seats. That said, it’s not like kids aren’t necessarily welcome, but it seemed like a joint more appropriate for business meetings, bloggers, and people who simply love having a great cup of coffee.
