A Vancouver Mom’s First Electric Adventure: Chevrolet Blazer EV

I’ll be honest – when I headed to the Chevrolet dealership to pick up the 2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV SS in Radiant Red Tintcoat for a week-long test drive, I was nervous. This was my first time behind the wheel of an electric vehicle, and I had all the typical questions swirling in my head. What if I run out of charge? How do I even charge this thing? Will it feel weird to drive?

The moment I saw it parked at the dealership, though, that gorgeous dark red exterior caught my eye. And when I opened the door? The red interior made me smile. It’s sporty without being over the top, and honestly made me feel a bit like a cool mom instead of just… mom.

Turns out, I had nothing to worry about. By day two, I was completely smitten with this SUV.

The panoramic moonroof was a game changer, especially during our typical Vancouver weather swings. On those rare sunny December days, the natural light flooding in was absolutely lovely. Even on grey, drizzly mornings (so, most mornings), it kept the cabin feeling open and bright instead of cave-like.

Now, let’s talk about the driving experience. The Chevrolet Blazer EV SS is smooth. Like, really smooth. There’s no engine rumble, no gear shifts – just this instant, quiet power that made me feel like I was gliding down the road. I took it all over the Lower Mainland for holiday events, including a trip to Capilano Suspension Bridge for Canyon Lights. Navigating through North Van traffic and winding roads felt effortless.

The heated seats and steering wheel? A Vancouver winter essential. My hands stayed toasty warm, and by the time we hit Highway 1 from Surrey to North Vancouver, I was brave enough to test out the cruise control. Can I just say, it made that stretch so much more relaxing?

Here’s something that blew my mind: this SUV goes from 0 to 96 km/h in 3.4 seconds. I’m not usually a speed demon, but when I needed to merge onto the highway or pass someone, the acceleration was immediate and confidence-boosting. With 615 horsepower and dual-motor all-wheel drive, it handled beautifully in wet conditions (because, Vancouver).

The “Hey Google” feature became my new best friend. I could ask it questions, get directions to events, and it even told me how much charge I’d have left when I arrived at my destination. No more range anxiety! Plus, it would show me charging stations along my route if I needed them. One charge gave me up to 488 kilometres – which is wild considering the average Canadian only drives about 292 km per week. I did a week’s worth of errands, school pickups, and holiday outings without charging once.

Tech That Actually Makes Life Easier

When I did finally charge it, I was shocked at how fast it was. Ten minutes of fast charging added about 125 km of range. That’s less time than a coffee run at Starbucks.

Space-wise, this SUV worked perfectly for our family needs. There’s plenty of legroom in both the front and back seats, so no one’s complaining about being cramped. The trunk? Spacious enough for a full Costco haul plus my niece’s stroller. I didn’t have to play trunk Tetris, which is always a win.

The Super Cruise feature is worth mentioning, too. On compatible highways, it offers hands-free driving – yes, literally hands off the wheel and feet off the pedals. I didn’t use it much since I was still getting comfortable with the whole EV experience, but knowing it’s there for longer road trips is pretty amazing.

By the end of the week, when I drove back to the dealership to return it, I was genuinely sad to hand over the keys. It made me realize that electric vehicles aren’t just the future – they’re ready for right now. No range anxiety, no complicated charging drama, just smooth, powerful, practical driving that fit seamlessly into my busy mom life.

Bonus: Meet the Chevrolet Equinox EV

Oh, and a quick bonus – I also got the chance to try out the Chevrolet Equinox EV for a day. It’s a smaller, more compact option, but has all the same great features inside as the Blazer. If you’re looking for something a bit easier to maneuver around tight Vancouver parking spots but still want that EV experience, it’s definitely worth checking out.

If you’re on the fence about going electric, I’d say take one for a test drive. You might just surprise yourself like I did.
