Weekly Family Programs: Takashi Murakami

Feb 11- April 4

During this special series of Weekly Family Programs, we will be learning about the overarching concepts and themes in Takashi Murakami’s work. Families will be asked: how are artists layering traditional and contemporary art forms to create a new cultural language?

We will explore how Murakami is influenced by contemporary Pop Culture such as Tokyo’s Neo Pop, Critical Pop, Manga, Kawaii, and his concept of Superflat, as well as both digital and factory production methods.

Our workshops will create opportunities for experimentation with printmaking, digital design, layering, repetition, pattern, painting and sculpture. We will also highlight the role of illustration in contemporary Japanese culture with feature workshops by Vancouver-based illustrators and comic book creators.

Join us on Sundays as we experiment and create our own graphic floral patterns, album covers, illustrated alter egos, monsters, dragons and tigers with a large variety of materials, ranging from the digital to ink.
