Event Details

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become an astronaut? Join us on Family Day to take part in activities from the Canadian Space Agency’s Junior Astronauts Program.

Canada is going to the Moon! Our country is part of the NASA-led Lunar Gateway program, and the Junior Astronauts campaign will allow Canadian youth to test their skills and knowledge, understand how they can play a role in this important endeavour and get excited about space and science.

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is holding a Junior Astronaut Recruitment for youth who have completed all of the required activities in the program. Qualified participants from every province and territory will be chosen randomly to take part in a camp in August 2020, at CSA headquarters in Saint-Hubert, Quebec. During the camp, they will join astronauts, scientists and engineers for a week of space training! For full program details, and to register visit the Junior Astronaut Program portal.

Schools and youth organizations across Canada will be taking part in these activities. On Family Day we will be offering three activities from the program as part of general admission.

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES:
Activities are designed for youth in grades 6 to 9 and are focused on three streams — science and technology, fitness and nutrition, and communications and teamwork. All of the activities are available on the Junior Astronauts portal. On Family Day we will be running one activity from each stream. If you wish to complete activities that we are not offering our educators can offer support, but the activities will have to be completed at home.

To complete the activities you will be required to watch live demonstrations, a show in the Planetarium Star Theatre and explore out exhibits to collect data to complete the handouts. Our staff will be available throughout the day to help guide the Junior Astronauts through the activities. Parental support is recommended.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO TAKE PART?
Activities are included with the cost of general daytime admission.

NOT IN GRADE 6 to 9?
Don’t worry – you can join us to learn more about becoming an astronaut and make a mission patch, check out some space food and our space suit, and see a robot arm demonstration.

HOW DO I REGISTER?:
You can start the program today by registering your child on the Junior Astronaut website. Activities can be done at home, so there is no need to wait until February 17th to start.

Youth (grade 6 to 9) interested in participating in the Junior Astronauts Recruitment for the August training camp can take part by:

  1. Having a parent or guardian register online to create a profile (from January 6 to March 29, 2020).
  2. Participate in at least one activity in each of the three streams (science and technology, fitness and nutrition, and teamwork and communication).
  3. Submit a one to two minute video talking about a provided topic and explain why you would be a good Junior Astronaut candidate, as described in the camp Terms and Conditions.
