Looking for fun, free things to do with kids in the Lower Mainland? ArtStarts is pleased to offer free arts-based events for kids and families each month—in both Vancouver and New Westminster. Join some of the best artists working with young people for performances and workshops that explore a wide range of cultures and artistic disciplines.

Each 45-minute workshop takes place twice, at 11am and 1pm.

Please arrive a little early as this is a popular program. Ideal for ages 8 and under, but all are welcome. Free! Donations welcome.

Come to ArtStarts to enjoy Culture Days, the national celebration of arts and culture happening at the end of September. Here is a peek to what we have planned for families in Metro Vancouver:

Music can be used to generate interest in science, just as science can inspire new approaches to music. Using home-made instruments and humor, Andy demonstrates technology in music, scientific principles of sound, recycling in action, and even transforms a spoon into a guitar! Volunteers experience digital looping and beatboxing, chanted rhythms, Lego theremin, and other amazing inventions inspired by instruments from Africa and Asia. A wonderfully fun testament to recycling and multiculturalism!

Suitable for children 8 and under

About Andy the Musical Scientist

Andy, is an award-winning musician/scientist who, after touring the world with the band Delhi 2 Dublin, decided to focus on creating instruments out of recycled items. Personifying a meeting place for the worlds of music and science, he uses invented instruments, world music, and humor, along with a pro recycling message, to enthrall young audiences with a truly unique and educational performance.

Andy has performed and studied in over 20 countries, including India, South Africa, and the Forbidden City in China. He has performed for the Prime Minister, British Royal family, and even appears on a Raffi CD.
