Calling all youth: Apply for a $5,000 Shaw #KindnessSticks grant

Let’s face it, when it comes to peer pressure, bullying and community, students are the ones who really know what’s happening on the ground and online at their schools. With that in mind, Shaw is placing grants that support a culture of kindness in Canadian schools in the hands of students.

Shaw wants to reward youth who want to make a difference in their schools with the Shaw Kindness Sticks Grant Program. From now until April 30, students from across Canada can apply for 1 of 10 grants of up to $5,000 to bring a positive initiative to life in their school. They are looking for creative and viable initiatives from youth on how to make the school a positive, inclusive and space safe for everyone.

A Few Quick Facts on Bullying

  • 1 in 3 Canadian youth have been cyber bullied.
  • 50% of Canadian parents say their child has been a victim of bullying.
  • On average, bullying tends to stop within 10 seconds after bystanders intervene.

How to Apply for a #KindnessSticks Grant

From today until April 30, students can apply online for a chance to receive a grant of up to $5,000 to put towards an initiative that inspires positivity and inclusivity at their schools.

All entries should suggest an activity or initiative that can empower students to come together and support one another through inclusivity and friendship. Whether it’s a buddy bench that encourages classmates to sit together and get to know each other, a community garden that is dedicated to friendship and respect, or a kindness carnival that brings games and activities that encourage teamwork and cooperation—students are invited to be creative and think outside the box in their ideas.

Once the submission period has closed, a panel of expert judges will review the applications and award 10 grants to the selected students and their schools. All Shaw Kindness Sticks grant recipients will be announced in September 2018, and finalist stories will be featured at Shaw.ca/KindnessSticks.
