Local Drinks for Dads this Father’s Day

2 people and their dogs

Yes this is Vancouver MOM, but this time we focus on the dads, and instead of just suggesting things you can try – we went right to the makers and their fathers to shine the light on some locally-made libations in a different way …

Look for these family-owned choices to enjoy with your dad or send to him this Father’s Day. And as always, enjoy responsibly.

Open up the wine and the conversation

Kyla Richey and father George Richey

Recently leaving her role as the captain of the Team Canada Women’s volleyball team to take up a new career in winery ownership, Kyla Richey is now one of the new owners of Stoneboat Vineyards in Oliver.

Her recommendation for her dad George Richey is the Stoneboat 2015 Rock Opera Reserve. “I love giving this wine some time to open up while catching up with Dad while we prepare dinner,” she says.

Aromas of blackberry and plum, with notes of dark fruit, cherry and spicy tobacco. The chewy tannins and bright acidity make this wine great to sip alone or with anything on the grill – think juicy steaks, grilled mushrooms, or smoked sausages. It even pairs well with dark chocolate for dessert. The uniqueness of Pinotage makes it such a versatile and amazing wine!

Rally for a cause

Movember Rain Charity Red Ale

On Vancouver Island, at Saanich’s Twa Dogs Brewery, father-son owners Graeme and Alexander Macaloney suggest that a beverage that would be best for dads is the Movember Rain Charity Red Ale. With flavours of toasted malts and light hops, this beautifully-balanced beer was made in collaboration with the Saanich Fire Department Charity Foundation for Men’s Health, with proceeds from every four pack donated to men’s health.

A great BBQ pairing

Singletree Winery
Garnet and Andrew Etsell

In Abbotsford, Singletree Winery is run by two generations (with the young third generation starting to chip in). Owner-dads Garnet and Andrew Etsell invite people to enjoy a glass of Harness, the perfect farm-inspired blend of Bordeaux varietals. Dads (and moms) will be enticed by the aromas of leather, tobacco and spice with rich black fruits, and a rich mouthfeel of toasty oak and supple tannins.

Perfect to pair with a steak on the BBQ to celebrate the day.

Have a little hang time

Hang Time – Peach Infused Cid
John Woodward is flanked by sons Adam and Ben

When asked what of their ciders he and his brothers Ben and Tim would suggest for their father John, Adam Woodward of the brother-run Woodward Cider Co in Kamloops says “I would choose Hang Time – Peach Infused Cider. All the hard-working Dads out there deserve a little time to kick back and chill out which makes Hang Time the perfect choice! This bevy quenches the thirst after a long day at work, after a round of golf, or out on the boat in the sunshine! The real peaches used in this product are not overpowering or sweet. Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there!”

Make memories

Nostalgia Family Collection Meritage
Gina Harfman with father Ken Harfman

We finish off In Oliver BC at Nostalgia Wines, owned and run by 4th generation farmer Gina Fernandes Harfman. She named her winery Nostalgia as gathering around wines is all about sharing and creating memories; a great sentiment for Father’s Day.

“For Father’s Day, I have to recommend our 2018 Nostalgia Family Collection Meritage,” she says.

“I named the top tier of Nostalgia Wines the Family Collection because I get the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for our Meritage from my family’s vineyard in Osoyoos.”

My Dad planted Cab in 1997 and he grows beautiful fruit on this property where I grew up. I think it is a great gift for any father, as the wine is top quality, complex and bursting with dark fruit flavours and spice.
