In my pre-baby and pregnancy days, I was really into kickboxing and I’ve missed it. It made me feel strong, powerful and indestructible and really improved my fitness. So after a two-year hiatus from cardio or exercising other than carrying my son up and down the stairs, I went to 30 Minute Hit to ‘kick-start’ my way back into fitness.
The fitness plan
30 Minute Hit is a high-intensity kick boxing circuit for women of all levels of fitness. You complete two-minute intervals on punch bags, pads or mats with 15 seconds to catch your breath and move to the next one. As you work the circuit, a trainer is there the entire time motivating and pushing everyone to keep going — an added bonus you don’t get at a regular gym.
The first time is always the hardest
I was excited to put my gloves back on, but I was terrified of the huffing and puffing that was going to ensue. As I worked the circuit, I went from skipping rope, to punching and jabbing, to crunches, then roundhouse kicks, to more crunches and kicking, then a few slightly more torturous exercises. After only 30 minutes, my heart rate was crazy high and I was sweating bullets – I still felt it in my abs days later. It was tough, but an effective fitness plan and an enjoyable workout.
Supportive of moms
There isn’t childcare, but you are welcome to bring your children. Bring a playpen, toys or the sacred iPad or iPhone and your children can amuse themselves while you work out. And since it’s only 30 minutes, they might just get through it without whining. It also makes it easy to fit it into a mom’s busy schedule. As I walked out, I read their achievement board that featured milestones of some of the members. One woman had lost 40lbs by going only three days a week.
