Get Moving, Get Inspired: Health Here Help There

Article by Naomi Casiro, sharing her idea for how to get inspired.

It’s all About Inspiration

Ever been told that you should exercise more? Go to the gym? Eat better? We are told all the time that these are things we need to do in order to live long, healthy lives, and the reality is, it’s true. The question is why don’t we just do it then?

In my years as a boot camp instructor, swim coach, and physiotherapy student I knew there was something behind it, some answer, but could never quite put my finger on it. That was until I came back from a small town in the province of Chaco, Argentina, then it hit me. Inspiration. No one who hates the gym wants to drag their butt there everyday to sweat it out. Heck, if someone told me I had to get healthy by say…playing basketball (which I am terrible at), or eating mustard (which I hate) I would do it for an hour, a day, or at best a week. So what was my inspiration?

In Argentina I met a group of young girls living in a poor neighborhood who, against all odds, were trying to stay on track and create a better future. They were doing this by studying after school in a small room with no chairs, tables, books or supplies. Led by a volunteer who taught them twice a week, they studied and took walking field trips to places like the library to open their eyes to the world of education. I was inspired. There was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to do something to help.

Growing up in a good neighborhood here in Canada with parents committed to education and health I knew that we could do something. We have the gift of opportunity, we have the chance to help give these girls the tools to pry open the doors to a better future. With a budget of $0, this inspiration, and my passion for health and wellness, Health Here Help There was born.
