Checking out Portobello West Market
It’s always fun to discover up-and-coming artists and designers, and Portobello West market is the perfect place to do just that. Held the last Sunday of every month at Creekside Community Recreation Centre in the Olympic Village by False Creek, the market is a great place to pick up hip, unique items that will give your wardrobe or home that extra flair.
Hip and cool
I’d been hearing about the market for a while but, frankly, was under some sort of misguided impression that I wasn’t hip enough to go there. (One of my best friends once watched me wrap a present and, laughing, said, “I used to think you were crafty, but you’re not crafty at all!”)
However, for the April market, I decided to put those feelings aside and venture in. After all, just because I’m not crafty or artsy, doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy people who are and their beautiful things.
Great deal
I was greeted at the door by smiling ladies who asked for a $2 admission fee. Yes, it’s only $2 to get in, and kids under 12 are free. If you plan to go often, or if you just want to show your support, you can also become a market Member for just $15. The membership gives you free admission for a year and 10-20 per cent off at participating market vendors.
Easy access
Once inside, I was pleasantly surprised at how non-crowded it was. There was a steady flow of people, but the space was large enough and the tables placed far enough apart that I could easily see, touch, and smell all the goods I wanted to without having to elbow my way through and worry about stepping on any feet.
Unique products
The artisans had a good mix of products to satisfy a lot of different tastes and interests. Mena Dragonfly had simple white pottery with a bold, bright dot in the bottom of each bowl, giving it a clean, but vibrant look. Hop Frog Pond had reusable gift bags in fun designs, and Pink Penguin Cakes had gorgeous cupcakes that I had to force myself not to step away from. The jewelry on a couple of different tables alone made the visit completely worthwhile–gorgeous, unique stuff that you wouldn’t find at the shopping mall.
But my favourite table was definitely Notice Me Hats. I was looking for a flower to wear in my hair for a gala at my son’s school and the table had some great, notice-me flowers with feathers and details that would have done just the trick (this was a few days before the royal wedding, so I didn’t yet know the word “fascinator”).
Support local artists
Not only is Portebello West the ideal place to score unique finds, it’s also a great way to support local artists and designers—something I’m always happy to do.
The next market is Sunday, May 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Visit their website to find out more and scope out your must-hit tables before you go.
Tip: Spoil yourself–drop your husband and kids off at Science World next door beforehand so you can truly enjoy yourself and not be rushed or worried about what the kids are grabbing every five minutes.
