Event Details

Think you can’t dance? ArtStarts knows you can! Join Canada’s only free, public gallery exclusively dedicated to young people’s art for the launch of their new exhibition, Movement is for Every Body! Explore movement for all bodies through this unconventional exhibition! ArtStarts will be celebrating works by young people that engage the body, and push the boundaries of dance and performance.

This two-part exhibition is a celebration of groundbreaking student art that challenges what movement, dance, and performance could be. From now until October, the current phase of the exhibit will highlight the work of over 550 students across four BC schools, in collaboration with artists and teachers. From building humans of the future to dancing to the Beatles, these students are shaking up what it means to learn through movement—in their classrooms, art galleries, and all around their neighbourhoods. If a young person you know has ever been told to stand still, slow down, hurry up, keep up with the group, or stop moving in an art gallery, this exhibit is for them!

All of ArtStarts’ work in so-called Vancouver takes place on the unceded, traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples.

THE LAUNCH PARTY
On August 11, 2018, join ArtStarts for a special launch party to celebrate the opening of Movement is for Every Body. Between 11am – 1pm, there will be by-donation, dynamic drop-in art experience for families & kids in the ArtStarts Gallery. Play with shadows in their silhouette booth, make your own cyborg, and draw while you dance! Suitable for ages 12 and under accompanied by an adult.

AGENDA
11am-12pm
ArtStarts Explores: Move like Plants
We will draw inspiration from all different kinds of plants to explore new ways to move! Can you mimic a flower? How about the way a tree grows? How about tall grass when the wind moves through it? No movement experience required! Please note that we will be filming much of the session for use in part two of our gallery exhibition starting in October.

12:30pm-1pm
Leah Horlick and Lily Cryan, Program Manager and Coordinator, will share the inspiration behind the exhibit and guide participants on how to interact with the space.

ASL INTERPRETATION
ASL interpretation will be provided for the launch party! If you will be accessing the ASL interpretation, please reply to [email protected] by August 6th to RSVP and indicate the number of individuals who will access this service.

A NOTE ABOUT ACCESS
This exhibition encourages art on the move! Visitors are encouraged to follow a series of dotted lines throughout the space—all bodies can follow all the lines, but may do so in different ways. We ask visitors to be respectful of their neighbours’ personal space and the artwork while moving throughout the Gallery. All bodies are good bodies! ArtStarts is a wheelchair accessible space equipped with a lift and accessible washrooms. ASL interpretation is available for events and tours by request.
