10 Reasons to Feel Good About Eating Chocolate

When it comes time to give yourself a little treat at the end of a long day, how many of us moms reach for a bar of chocolate? Indulging in a little chocolate therapy doesn’t have to be a guilt-inducing pastime.

Here are ten reasons to feel good about eating chocolate.

1. Flavenoids in chocolate have antioxidant properties, which can have health benefits similar to those found in green tea, berries and wine. Get the most effect by choosing dark chocolate or a high-quality chocolate with cocoa mass as the first ingredient instead of sugar.

2. Fair trade chocolate benefits farmers in developing nations. Look for the fair trade symbol to make sure your bar fits the bill.

3. Organic chocolate also helps protect the environment from harmful pesticides. Many good-quality chocolates are now fair trade and organic, such as Green and Black’s or the My Therapy Bar.

4. Chocolate stimulates endorphin production, which helps you feel good. (But we knew this already, right?) There’s a reason why chocolate is so popular.

5. Flavenoids in chocolate also help reduce blood pressure through the production of nitric oxide, a molecule produced when our bodies relax. Nitric oxide causes the blood vessels to expand and works to bring more oxygen to cells.

6. A small bar of dark chocolate every day can help reduce blood pressure in people who suffer from high blood pressure.

7. Chocolate is high in calories, fat and contains stimulants such as caffeine. This can be a problem if you eat a lot, but a little bit can be just the boost you need to get through a long evening or a difficult hike.

8. The taste of chocolate, especially good-quality organic chocolate, is deep and complex. When it comes to chocolate, choose quality over quantity. You’ll get less, but it will taste better and saves having those extra calories around.

9. After a day spent serving carrot sticks and not eating treats in front of the children, it’s nice to sit down and enjoy some chocolate without trying to hide it.

10. Chocolate tastes really good with a nice glass of wine.

A little bit of chocolate every day is good for body and soul. Get the most out of your chocolate experience by choosing the best quality chocolate you can afford, choosing dark instead of milk or white chocolate, and let yourself savour and enjoy it without any guilt.
