What to do in Vancouver: After School Camp at UBC Farm

With Spring Break drawing to a close (or already behind us in parts of Metro Vancouver), many of us are wondering what to do in Vancouver to keep our kids active and engaged this spring. One possible answer is a new SpringFarmers after school camp at UBC Farm. The program is hands-on and farm-based. Your kids will receive a science-based education on land, food and community. They’ll work in small groups with staff and community volunteers. They’ll sow, tend, reap and then eat the food they grow, as they explore the 24 hectare farm.

Tamara Litke, Community Engagement Coordinator at the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm, says, “Most camps are a week long. This one spans three months. In that time, students can observe the changes in the farm. From an educational point of view, its a great value for families who want their children to learn some basic gardening skills and witness the UBC Farm wake up with the season! We’ll plant some seeds, keep a journal, work in the Children’s Greenhouse and have a chance to taste some of the early harvests.”

SpringFarmers is open 7 to 14 year olds. It runs weekly on Thursdays from 3:45-5:45pm, starting on April 4, 2013. There are 12 sessions in total, and fees are $300 per child. Each week of the program corresponds with a theme. Materials will be included to help families in exploring the themes in-depth at home – or perhaps at the local community garden.
