A Closer Peek at Peekaboo Beans

You may think that Peekaboo Beans is like any other mom-inspired Vancouver local clothing line: made by a local mom entrepreneur (check) who wanted funky cool styles (check). But a closer peek reveals that Peekaboo Beans is more than what you’d expect – much more.

Founded by Vancouver mom Traci Costa in 2006, Peekaboo Beans, whose tagline is “Playwear for Kids on the Grow”, strives to create playwear that integrates early childhood development.

To see what I mean, just take a look at some of the details. Thumb holes are in many of the shirts – not just for warmth and to help kids hold onto their sleeves when putting on another layer – but also because kids like putting their thumbs in thumb holes. Pants have drawstrings to accommodate tiny waists as well as to help kids pull them on and off when learning how to use the potty. Zippers have nice big pulls so that kids don’t have to fumble to use them. As for other fasteners, you’ll find no buttons or snaps so that kids can focus on playing rather than doing up their clothes.

But Peekaboo Beans has also thought of the big things as well. Top on their list: clothes that kids love to play in: A-line shapes accommodate comfort for “buddha bellies”. Flatlock stitching for less irritation on your child’s sensitive skin. Preshrunk clothes so that they’ll always fit your child perfectly.

Peekaboo Beans seems to have gained my five-year-old’s approval. It’s fancy enough for her to meet her princess aesthetic, but flexible enough to accommodate her movements as she swings freely from the monkey bars. You can also tell that the clothes are extremely well made. To avoid unsightly seams, the hood on my preschooler’s hoodie is double lined so that the inside of the hood looks just as good as the outside. The hoodie also fits her form perfectly, but I have a feeling that it wouldn’t matter what your child’s shape was for the clothes to fit so well.

Each of the garments also have ID labels as tags in case your child gets “lost in their imagination”.
The large size tags have messages like “Respect your friends”, “Be the best you can be”, and ” Live in the moment” and double as postcards that invite the kids to “mail some love”.

Coordinating styles and colours mean that you can mix and match. You’ll also know your kids will leave the house looking great no matter who dressed them – even themselves.
