Vancouver’s 7th Annual Hot Chocolate Festival is a chocolate lovers dream come true: 29 participants offering 61 incredible hot chocolate flavours over 27 days. Vancouver’s best cafes, bakeries, chocolatiers and gelato and ice cream makers will dazzle you with their innovative takes on the classic hot chocolate. Just reading the menu will send your taste buds into overdrive. Their motto is “Chocolate Makes You Happy.” And who are we to disagree?
Five hot chocolates to try at this year’s festival
Erin Goes Nutty at Bella Gelateria
A vegan hot chocolate drink made by infusing Erin Ireland’s “To Die For Vegan Pumpkin Bread”, with almond milk and a house blend of three different chocolates (58%, 72% and 85%).
Bengal Bliss at Diva at the Met
An exotic concoction of Cacao Berry semi-sweet bitter 58% cocoa, milk, Chantilly cream, five spice, cinnamon, cloves, pink peppercorn, chill and black pepper.
D’Oh at Soirette Macarons & Tea
Dark chocolate chip cookie dough hot chocolate. Served with a cookie dough toasted marshmallow.
Chupacabra at Bel Café
Valrhona Abinao dark chocolate with cane sugar, cinnamon, chili and cardamom.
Drunken Love at Chocolate Arts
A bowl of red wine ice cream topped with a red wine reduction. Served with a rich, hot chocolate and a shortbread cookie.
The Festival is on right now and runs until Valentine’s Day (Feb 14 in case you’ve forgotten!). It’s also a fundraiser for the Downtown Eastside Women’s Job Training Program of the PHS Community Services Society and East Van Roasters. Decadence for a good cause.
