Summer is finally here.

So what does that mean? Lots of BBQs, outdoor activities and trips to the beach. Here’s how you can beat the heat with this sizzling summer look.

Don’t just show up to the next BBQ in a boring pair of khaki shorts and a linty tank top. It’s super easy to look pulled together with a classic stripe and adding a pop of colour. But first things first. You need to understand your body shape. This outfit is perfect for the mom who has a slimmer upper body and womanly hips. The key is to draw the focus towards your face. So have fun and wear lots of colour and patterns on top. Just remember to keep your bottoms simple.

We fell in love with this dark denim skirt. At less than $30, you can replace those boring shorts and matronly skirts. The clean lines and strong structure of the fabric will tighten up those buns while letting you show off some leg (and yes, you’re allowed to be sexy!) Going perfectly with all your colourful t-shirts and shirts, you’ll be putting this $30 to good use.

Change things up a bit and play around in this cute striped T. The ruffle sleeves adds a unique detail to this nautical look. But don’t just wear it one way. Wear it underneath a jacket or a blazer and pair it with trousers for a whole new look.

Now instead of wearing the usual flip flips or black sandals, go bold and go red! Sexy shoes works for all shapes & sizes. Every woman needs to have a go-to pair of shoes that will sizzle things up in no time. Not only is this pair of sandals a steal at $34.50 but you can strut comfortably in this the low wedge heel too! Finally, complete this outfit by wearing a set of pretty bangles. The touch of metal make it ultra chic and shows you have great attention to detail.

Summer, bring it on. We’ll show you who’s really hot.

Who said frumpy comes with being a mom?

You’re exhausted from chasing the kids around all day, the mountain of laundry doesn’t seem to go down and you can’t remember the last time you had a full night sleep. The last thing you think about is how you look. So to console yourself, you say, “Well, at least I took a shower!” Let’s stop making excuses and start taking care of ourselves. Looking great can be fast, easy and affordable!

Here’s a simple way to feel absolutely comfortable without sacrificing style. Freshen up your wardrobe this summer with this versatile stretchy T. The cute bow gives it a fun & feminine feel and the peep hole detail is a little flirty. The extra length won’t have you pulling your top all day long. And the best part is, you can dress it up or wear it casual everyday. Pair it with a pencil skirt and heels for an evening out or throw on a pair of trousers and a jacket to the office.

Here’s a fun way to add some flare the next time you take the kids out to play. Instead of opting for jeans again, wear it with this pair of sports capris. It’s super comfy and will keep up with your go-go-go schedule. Stay away from a loose and plain t-shirt unless you’re heading to the gym. Otherwise, you’ll look frumpy and have the “I don’t care” look. When paired with this dressy top, it gives it a smart and casual image.

The finishing touches are so important when completing an outfit and looking put together. So revamp your boring shoe collection and pick up a pair of ankle sandals. The interesting beading on the straps of this one, makes for a pretty bracelet for your feet! Last but not least, add a great pair of earrings to top off your outfit. Sticking with the rugged but feminine look, these earrings have a delicate touch but dark & strong too.

For less than $70, you can be dressed from head-to-toe. Now, there’s definitely no excuses.

While some of these diaper bags are aspirational (read: over-the-top pricey) in their cost, I wanted to give you moms an idea that lugging around a diaper bag doesn't need to be a chore that brings down your outfit. In fact, it can be a wonderful accessory to your everyday life.

In 2005, I received two diaper bags as shower gifts from some well-meaning aunts. One coordinated with the green plaid of a particular stroller of a brand that I didn’t even own or intend to buy. The other bore a horrible pattern of sugary cute teddy bears on a pale blue quilted fabric. Ladies, you know what I’m talking about – and I’m sure you’d be equally as horrified as I was.

Back then, there were only a few nice modern diaper bag options for moms (I ended up with a wonderful bag from Skip Hop that’s still in production today). Today, as I browse the baby aisles for my third child, I’m blown away by the lovely and fashionable selection for moms of every different style and fashion sense.

This morning, VancouverMom.ca on Breakfast Television showing the new generation of moms the latest and greatest in diaper bags. While some of these diaper bags are aspirational (read: over-the-top pricey) in their cost, I wanted to give you moms an idea that lugging around a diaper bag doesn’t need to be a chore that brings down your outfit. In fact, it can be a wonderful accessory to your everyday life.

The Everyday Bag: The Theory Diaper Bag from JJ Cole Collections

There’s no need to sacrifice style for function. Along with a wide opening for easy access and a fashionable lining, this roomy diaper bag boasts eight organizer pockets, including an interior bottle pocket, along with a changing pad, wallet and pacifier pod. The outer material is water-resistant and easy to wipe so you can keep your bag free of spills that are bound to happen. Price: $99.99.

Buy the Theory Diaper Bag from JJ Cole Collections on LussoBaby.ca.

Diaper Bag Options That Dad Can Carry Too: Skip Hop Via Backpack and Pronto Changing Station

Why get a bag that only you can carry? Encourage some one-on-one dad and baby time by opting for a father-friendly diaper bag. Skip Hop has a wonderful collection of diaper bags and accessories, including the Skip Hop Via Backpack – a durable backpack with compartments specifically for all of baby’s gear. This bag opens like a book so you can access everything from one hand and end the groping around in your bottomless diaper bag. Price $70.

For even more flexibility, you can also opt for a diaper pad and folder like the Skip Hop Pronto Changing Station. This single unit has a change pad and a spot for diapers and wipes all in one convenient unit – perfect for chucking into a tote that isn’t screaming “diaper bag” all over it. Price: $30.

Find out more about the Skip Hop Via Backpack and Skip Hop Pronto Changing Station.

For the Aspiring Fashionista: Mia Bossi Caryn Bag

Anyone who knows me knows that I have a major weakness for beautiful handbags. The Mia Bossi Caryn Bag is the ultimate in high fashion, but also delivers in its functionality for mom. The bag comes with a machine-washable faux fur changing pad, four bottle holders (two interior and two exterior), a diaper holder, a baby wipe holder, and more. With a magnetic closure and wide opening, this bag allows for easy access and enough room to store everything for baby. Price: $499

Buy the Misa Bossi Caryn Bag on LussoBaby.ca.

High Fashion at Lower Price Point: Nest Children Quilted Diaper Bag

The owner of Lusso Baby tells me that a clerk at Holt Renfrew mistook this diaper bag from Nest Children as a Chanel bag. Compared to the Mia Bossi bag, the $179.99 for this diaper bag seems little more down-to-earth. But don’t be fooled by this bag’s good-looks: this diaper bag features two interior bottle holders and two divided pockets to store toys, books or extra clothing.

But it was really when she got back into photography that she was inspired to start Rhembein, a line of bright, fun and functional camera straps.

Having a camera often strung around her neck meant that she was well aware of how uncomfortable standard straps are that come with DSLR cameras. “The rubber backing was making my neck sweaty – ew!” says Gillian. She also saw some potential for adding a little flare – and was drawn to the idea of playing with fabric again. In addition to the neck strap, Gillian also makes a wrist/hand strap that allows you to cradle your camera in your hand while having it strapped around your wrist – and designed to just the way Gillian herself like to hold her camera. Neck straps sell at $25 to $30 and the Gilly wrist strap is available for $20 to $25.

A mom herself, Gillian is always looking for interesting items that are well-made and reasonably priced – “and washable!” Gillian adds. “It doesn’t matter how hard I try, somehow jam fingerprints show up on anything I really like.”

Rhembein camera straps are available online, but will soon be available at a few select locally owned children’s boutiques.

Jennifer Graham started Salts Organic Clothing out of an extreme love for clothing. The designer CEO loves the high she get from finding a cool new piece of clothing – and now can make the items she wants!

Salts combines flattering and comfy with surfy and yoga. Jennifer has sought to fine tune the line of her clothes to flatter women’s bodies and her clothes have the versatility of being dressed up or down. Labelling her line as “comfortable pretty,” Jennifer aims to make things that are both flattering and wear well, which is perfect for moms. “My casual life as a mom also means running to the store, going to the park, working out and yoga,” says Jennifer. “I want to look good and hip without feeling constricted as I run after my two-year-old.”

In addition to its adult line, Salts also makes Chubby Bubbies matching leggings and hats for newborns to two-year-olds.

Salts uses organically grown cotton in all its blends. “Conventional cotton is responsible for two-thirds of the world’s pesticide use.” says Jennifer, who also uses more sustainable ingredients in Salts’ fabrics like hemp, soy and viscose from bamboo. Clothing is also made in Vancouver, saving on carbon emissions and freight. “Salts is all about doing good, giving back and making things better.” Salts donates 1% of its sales to humanitarian causes through an organization called 1% for Humanity.

“We are trying to make the world a little bit nicer one hoodie at a time.”

Salts and Chubby Bubbies are available at WholeFoods Cambie and West Vancouver locations. Devil May Wear on Main carries Salts’ higher end pieces. Or shop online at www.Salts.etsy.com.

Many moms know the benefits of a soothing pedicure or hydrating body rub to chase away stress. Nowadays, treatments for kids are starting to pop up on the menus of many spas. While there have been questions raised about the safety and propriety of bringing kids as young as five to get pampered just like mom, spa treatments that are specially customized for children, rather than adult-size services, may be a great way to get in some bonding time and R-and-R.

Teen Dream

The number of teens hitting the spas has also drastically increased in the last few years. Teens can enjoy a wider range of services: whether it’s to treat skin problems like acne with a series of calming facials or to celebrate a birthday or prepare for prom. Skin care and nail services, makeup lessons and waxing have started to become standard among many among the 13-plus crowd. Some of the places that offer skin care lessons and spa treatments in Vancouver that are designed for teens include Le Petit Spa, the Fairmont Hotel, Pacific Palisades and Absolute Spa.

Starter Services

Mbody Spa in Vancouver offers “My First Spa Services” that are tailored for children aged 5-11 (parents need to be present). Children can visit the poolside Kids Cabana for spa experiences like the Little Mermaid Mani (15 mins, $25), which includes a soak, tropical fruit hand massage and sparkle polish. Or, they can opt for the Jitter Critters Massage (15 mins, $25), with a back, foot and head massage featuring lavender, tropical fruit, strawberry or root beer hydrating lotion. Teens (12-17), have their choice of treatments like the Glamour Girl ($110, 75 mins) with a manicure, pedicure, exfoliation and massage. Also, check their site for birthday party options.

The Royal Treatment

The Hairloft on Granville Island offers a Princess Spa package, a variety of unique spa services for kids, including the Princess Spa Package, which includes a hair updo, application of light makeup and nail polish. They also offer birthday party services for parties of up to 12 – check out the Silver package: a hair updo, light makeup, nail polish, sparkle, and temporary hair colour application, along with a snack, entertainment and gift for each child. (The cost is $35 per girl plus a 10% service fee). Princess Spa also offers other services such as first hair cuts for kids and ear piercing.

Things To Know

While many spas in Vancouver will accommodate little ones for a treatment like a pedicure or manicure, it’s important to remember that many treatments are best left for mom. Sauna services or full body wraps aren’t suitable for kids, so stick to ones that have been designed specifically for children. Most places won’t perform certain services on chidren anyways, and there are usually regulations for kids’ treatments – parents may be required to sign a release form beforehand and be present during the spa experience.

And just like wearing makeup, you’ll have to decide when – and if – your child is ready for a spa appointment.

VancouverMom.ca Reader Question: What’s your view on the spa experience for children?

Dropping some hints to your man about some new lingerie? Want to make sure that you’re not opening up some awful number that doesn’t fit or – worse – is all itchy on your nether regions? Here’s some advice for the men in your life who might be suffering from a bad case of the “I don’t knows.”

Cost

Lingerie comes in all sorts of price points so there is sure something to fit any budget. However, by shopping online, you might be able to save some extra bucks since the stores might not have the same overhead. “You can eliminate both ‘store’ and ‘pricey’ from the equation by shopping on line!” say Panty By Post owners Lori Sholzberg and Natalie Grunberg. Since it’s only a few days before Christmas, it may be too late to get lingerie delivered to you from most online stores. But you may want to consider Panty By Post’s subscription service – a present that keeps on giving. Sign up for the service and expect panties to be delivered according to the package you’ve purchased. “Sweeter than candy and longer lasting than flowers our panties come in a special package with a handwritten note from your lips to hers.”

Sizing

It’s critical that lingerie fits properly. Ill fitting bras and undies can “lead you to the dog house instead of to her heart.” The Panty By Post experts suggest simply sneaking into her lingerie drawer and checking the label. While bra fitting might be tricky to do without her knowledge, if you happen to know her size, it’s best to refer to the size chart on the store’s web site. Note that sizing can vary according to style.

Style

The beauty of lingerie as a gift is that while the present is ultimately for her, you as the giver can benefit too! Lori and Natalie categorize the lingerie into “play” and “everyday”. “Play lingerie is super fun for the bedroom but you can also take the safe road and stick to styles that she can enjoy every day.” Be sure to choose lingerie that fits her lifestyle and thoughtfulness. Undecided? Panty By Post offers a subscription that has both!

Vancouver Mom asked a few of our favourite local merchants to put together their list of top gifts. The following is a guest post by Sue Sinclair, Chief Executive Mom of Raspberry Kids. Sue has also offered VancouverMom.ca readers 15% off any purchase at Raspberry Kids between now and December 15th, 2009. At checkout, please use promo code: vancouvermoms15.

You are the quarterback, the Jill of all trades, the CEO of the family, the Chef, the Chauffeur, the milk factory, the referee, the tutor and the housekeeper. Let’s face it Vancouver Moms, we have a lot on our plates!

And for just that reason, we have come up with a list of gems just for you this holiday season. How do you make sure you get what you really want? You either drop some very obvious hints (including URLs, magazine clippings taped to the mirror with big circles drawn around the item you desire) or you pick up a little something for yourself while you are running around like a mad woman leading up to the holidays.

Some suggestions for you include:

My Quoteable Kid

OK, already, I know you are asking what the heck does that have to do about Moms but if you are like me, you get a huge kick out of all of your hilarious Out Of The Mouth Of Babes (OOTMOB’s as we like to call them at Raspberry Kids) moments and this wonderful book allows you to capture each of them in an organized fashion. This is a much better option than jotting these newsy items on bits of paper or a restaurant napkin. These books are small enough to keep in your purse or diaper bag and in a pinch, you can use them for a quick status update on Facebook or Twitter or as a conversation starter at your holiday parties.

Anything from BLUSH Designs

We recently connected with a local mom who designs some of the prettiest jewelry around, Christine from BLUSH designs, who also has been nominated for VancouverMom.ca’s 30 Essential Jewellery Designer list. Check out the pieces she has made exclusively for Raspberry Kids including earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Considering the lack of sleep we get, we need to replace the sparkle in our eye with something!

Espe

Long before we launched Raspberry Kids we were fans of Canadian designed espe products and now we are so pleased to sell them in our store. The range includes so many funky, adorable and modern designs in a range of colors so there truly is something for everyone. From wallets, to lunch bags, to luggage or laptop bag tags, to shoulder pouches, to card holders and notebooks, these make an excellent gift for thyself or others (think Caregivers, Teachers, Hostess gifts).

Momiji Secret Message Dolls

Momiji Secret message dolls aren’t just for young girls to collect. I bought my first Momiji doll called Sister for myself and have sent these to others to help brighten their day. Can you think of a Party Girl or a Funny Girl or perhaps someone who is having a Very Big Birthday or likes to Dance, Dance, Dance or maybe someone who qualifies as your Favorite Person, Best Friend or who deserves a Thank You.

Klean Kanteen

Last but certainly not least are the wonderful products from Klean Kanteen. We’ve long used the water bottles in our family but were absolutely over the moon when they recently came out with Klean Kanteen wine Karafes, available in stainless steel or merlot colored. For someone who likes the outdoors, walks, hiking, picnics and who also loves red wine, this item is a must have under your tree.

From Raspberry Kids to VancouverMoms, we wish you a fresh, healthy & fun holiday season and we would like to offer VancouverMoms 15% off their purchases between now and December 15th, 2009. At checkout, please use the promotional code: vancouvermoms15. Visit www.raspberrykids.com now.
