While growing up in Houston, Texas, my ailing grandfather gave me an Olympus 35mm, I loved that camera! It ignited a passion within me for photography. I studied film photography for 2 years. I held onto my dream when I got to University. I wanted to be museum curator and photographer. I studied art, light, and film photography. As John Lennon sings, my University studies shifted and I went to work full time.
Now, I am back and it is a digital world. I love working outside in beautiful BC or into a home setting for more lifestyle shoots.
I specialize in photographing newborn and babies, and kids. These tender moments are so special because they change so quickly.
My style is very simple and modern with minimal props and styling. I lean heavily towards black and white, which is my first love, but I love colour too. I love getting to know families and being a part of the very beginning of these tiny, little lives.
When not with my camera, I can be found with my family, Mark, my partner of 20 years, and our 8 year old son…oh, and my sense of humour.
“A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people.” – Annie Leibovitz
My name is Celina Lam and I specialize in Maternity, Newborn and Child Photography in the Vancouver area. I enjoy working in the studio as well as outdoors, and occasionally visit client homes for Lifestyle sessions.
Formally trained in photography at Langara College, I’ve been doing photography professionally and full-time since 2011. Knowledge and experience from countless newborn, maternity and baby sessions help me to create memorable keepsakes for families to cherish for years to come. I have limitless patience when working with newborns and little ones, and have learnt to read the expressions and signs that tell me what’s needed to make the session run more smoothly.
When I first started the business, I fell in love with Newborn photography. There’s something so sweet and special about newborns. It was also the type of photography that worked well with my calm, observant personality and attention to detail. I decided to make it my area of specialization to have the opportunity to capture this precious and fleeting time in a baby’s life. The first couple weeks of a newborn’s life can be a bit of a blur for new parents, and through all the feedings, changings, and just learning to be new parents, your baby is developing and changing with every single day. Before you know it, weeks and months pass, and they are no longer the tiny little newborn you first held in your arms.
Naturally, from there I’ve also come to love capturing the beauty of pregnancy for expecting parents. Maternity sessions are a chance for moms-to-be to shine and feel beautiful, to celebrate the love between expecting parents, and to capture the anticipating moments before the baby’s arrival. They’re memories that not only mom and dad will have forever, but also images for a child to cherish when he or she grows up.
It’s always a joy for me to be able to witness all the important milestones in a baby’s first year of life. They are growing and changing month to month, and experiencing many things for the first time. It’s amazing to see how the little newborns I photographed have grown, and fun to help document their next milestones in creative ways.
Whether in the studio or outdoors, or at a client’s home, I love crafting beautiful and fun images while capturing the natural personality of my subjects. In studio, I enjoy creating imaginative, whimsical, or beautiful sets for my clients. Some are simple and fresh, some a little more elaborate or fun, I’m always thinking up new ones. I also enjoy taking my subjects outdoors and photographing in natural environments that never cease to offer variety and beauty. Lifestyle sessions in client homes are also a chance for me to create authentic memories for clients in their own homes and to capture the connection between family members. To be able to freeze time and preserve quickly passing memories for parents and children truly lends meaning to my work.
Smiles have always been my thing, but I haven’t always been a paid photographer.
While I’ve always been the go-to amateur photographer for my own family reunions, social clubs and school events, I haven’t taken photos professionally until recently.
For nearly fourteen years, I was a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA). I worked for a periodontist, focusing on implants to help patients have healthy smiles. I was injured on the job, and my injury forced me to explore other career options. I felt I finally had the chance to consider my lifelong passion of family photography as a real career choice.
My spouse Shawn, a successful web designer, kept saying, “You’ve got a knack for this!” I finally listened. In 2009, after my older kid turned three, I started freelancing.
I quickly found a network of professional photographers eager to share tips, tricks and techniques. I’ve been inspired by some amazing photographers throughout the world—from BC-based Jasalyn Thorne and her exquisite wedding shots to insights from Me Ra Koh’s newsletter for photographers. They’ve each helped me to build my confidence.
Chickadee Photos is focused on infant, baby and child photography for families across the Lower Mainland. Young families count on me for my invaluable talent to engage kids during a shoot to capture photos of the whole family—from infants to grandparents.
During the past five years, I’ve added many family photo shoots to my portfolio. With the launch of my redesigned website at the start of 2014, I hope to reach even more families in need of photography services in Vancouver and across the Lower Mainland.
Dr. Melanie Mattson is a dentist and certified specialist in orthodontics, practicing in the Hastings-Sunrise area of Vancouver. he was born and raised in the interior of British Columbia in the city of Trail. Her small town roots and sense of community motivated her to create a similar environment in her orthodontic practice, one where patients feel comfortable and welcome, and where they know that they are an important part of the team. Dr. Mattson personally attends to every patient at every visit, and always takes the time to answer questions from patients and parents alike.
Her post secondary educational career began with undergraduate studies in microbiology at the University of Calgary, and continued at the University of Alberta where Dr. Mattson obtained her degree in dentistry. Upon graduation, she entered a general practice residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, where she gained additional training in emergency dentistry, oral surgery and special care dentistry. Having this valuable experience after dental school has made her a well-rounded practitioner with a thorough understanding of all facets of dentistry.
Dr. Mattson was thrilled to have the opportunity to return to British Columbia when she enrolled at UBC for three years of specialty training in orthodontics, earning her Masters degree in craniofacial sciences. She is a dually certified specialist, both as a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada as well as a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.
She is well versed in all areas of orthodontics, with a particular interest in interceptive orthodontic techniques for young children with functional bite issues. By creating a good environment for teeth to grow in to, the degree of difficulty of orthodontic treatment can be greatly reduced, and in some circumstances, braces can be avoided altogether! Dr. Mattson considers herself a life long learner and is dedicated to offering the highest quality care to her patients. She routinely participates in study clubs, courses and conferences to keep up to date with the latest advances in orthodontic treatment.
Dr. Mattson is thrilled to be a part of the East Vancouver community and is looking forward to working with her patients to help them achieve beautiful healthy smiles that they are happy to show off to the world!
We welcome you and your children to our family dental office! Our dental practice is located in North Vancouver, and we are proud to offer gentle and caring dentistry for the whole family. We believe in preventative dentistry where quality outweighs quantity. “Building Healthy, Beautiful Smiles, one visit at a time” has been our calling since Third Street Dental opened in 1999.
Our team at Third Street Dental is committed to offering top-quality family dental care in a fun, and comfortable setting. We work latex-free, and use the safest dental materials and sterilization procedures in the industry. Our team is dedicated to continuous learning, and being current with the latest dental research. We are passionate about educating our clients on how to achieve a healthy smile.
We care for your child’s oral health through prevention, quality treatment, and positive motivation. Every child deserves to have a healthy smile. This starts with regular dental examinations and dental cleanings. Many parents ask us when they should first bring their child in to see us. The Canadian Dental Association recommends that a child be seen 6 months after the first tooth eruption, or by one year of age. This offers the opportunity to check your child’s teeth, and begin a regular routine towards good oral care.
There are two dentists at the North Vancouver dental practice – Dr. MelissaSkinner and Dr. Courtney Butler. Both originally from Vancouver, and both graduates from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of British Columbia. Dr.Skinner and Dr. Butler share similar professional values, and care deeply for their patients’ overall health.
Our practice is at Third Street Dental in the lower Lonsdale area of North Vancouver. Our dentists, Dr. Skinner and Dr. Butler are presently accepting new patients. For dental tips and information, please visit my blog at www.thirdstreetdentaldrskinner/blog.
